Deneba Software has released Canvas 8 for Windows, a precision illustration software program that also integrates photo editing, page layout, desktop presentation, and Web graphics capabilities. The application will ship for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X this summer for an estimated $400 (competitive upgrades are $250). Canvas 7 purchases made after March 30, 2001 are eligible for a free upgrade.

    Great...

Deneba, a formerly Mac only company is now shipping winblowz versions 2+ months BEFORE a Mac version. Thanks, but no thanks.

    Windowsification

Canvas became "Windowsified" a while back. Look at the tab dialogs and stuff in Canvas 6...it even uses QuickHelp to emulate the Windows Help system. This is just the final confirmation of the changeover.

    Windowsification

Deneba said some weeks ago that they would release Canvas 8 first for windoze because of the lack of stable info on OS X. This is a
first for them, but an exception. Their policy remains to release for both platforms at the same time.

    Cut them a break

Come on, X is a month and a half old. Would you rather they throw out a crappy app right away? They probably held off on the Mac version so they could do a decent job supporting X. Quit bitching - it'll be one more app in the X fold when it comes out.

(and they can incorporate bugfixes from the Winblows version- let the other side betatest for us for a change - i bet their first Mac release will be 8.0.1)

Yes X might not be stablized... but what about for 9 users? Is it going to be a carbonized only release?

    OS X

Canvas 8 is obviously going to be a carbon App that will run in OS X and classic mac os with the carbon Lib. However what really annoys the h*** out of me is all of the ignorant mac users who think Deneba is doing a crime by waiting a few months after the windows release to give mac user canvis 8.

Getting an app to run smoothly on both classic and OS X is not as smooth as one might think. These folks are developing for a incompleate OS that was GMed only a few weeks ago. h*** game developers finally got access to draw sprockets 2 days ago.

Moreover, I still don't think apple has access to 2d hardware acelleration, scanners, scsi, etc fully done. This sure as h*** slows you down if your building a design app in carbon.

If you want to blame someone for software delays, blame apple. Idiots.

    Canvas?

This former Mac Only company has been moving away from Mac software to Windows. I see these new versions of Canvas as, at best, an alternative for users who do not like or need the capability of Adobe products.

    Fortunately for those...

Fortunately for those in the know... who can handle the learning curve, and are flexible enough to move beyond the Adobe shadow, Canvas has had features for years, that Illustrator is just recently beginning to even approximate. (for those that need an example: transparency in vector.)
Worth the wait. spec for carbonated.

Canvas 8 may be OS X only

Deneba has said they are ripping out all the QuickDraw code and using PDF for superior OS X graphics.

This in part may explain the delay
