Apple engineers report that game developers will find improvements to DrawSprocket in the Mac OS X 10.0.2 update that was released yesterday. "...DrawSprocket should be working very well for both OpenGL and 2D graphics," notes Apple Engineer Geoff Stahl. "The implementation is in-sync with Carbon SDK headers for Mac OS X API support. This should be a wonderful improvement in DrawSprocket reliability and functionality."

    Re: InputSprockets

InputSprockets was axed in Mac OS X and replaced with the more low-level, bare-bones HID Manager. Developers are still waiting for Apple to provide more information on it so they can use it in their apps (read: games).

    Video still too slow

Will Quartz ever make use of my video card? Scrolling documents make the cpu hit max and it's choppy. It's a rage 128 mobile. This is by far my biggest complaint about OS X. Video performance in the finder and 2D functinos are horribly slow. Why can't these be put off to my video card instead of my cpu?

    umm

The only 2D acceleration anybody gets is paging CG surfaces to video memory by the kernel. This would accelerate scrolling if the vew being scrolled was paged, but that doesn't currently seem to be the case. Unfortunate.

As for Input Sprockets it's a pity Apple has dropped this. HID is extremely low level and doesn't even handle calibration! This means every single app has to do it, and we all know how crappy that can be (see Pod Racer).

It's like QD3D in a way. OpenGL is not a replacement for QD3D, it's a replacement for RAVE. HID is not a repacement for Input Sprockets. It's far too low level.
