Kensington has released an updated version of its $20 FlyLight Notebook USB Light, which features the latest white LED technology. The two-ounce device plugs into a USB port and functions as a small light source, intended primarily for illuminating a laptop's keyboard.

Yeah, but it'd be even more wicked if Apple had built-in a soft, software-switchable backlight behind the keyboard so this sort of extra weight wouldn't be necessary. That's one of the rumoured add-ons that I really would have liked to see on the product page. This Kensington device would still have sold to people with older notebooks, but it's the wrong way to go overall.

For external illumination, I frequently use my notebook's screen. ;)

    Gooseneck Not Long Enough

I'm not sure if they changed this thing at all, but I managed to "snake" a pre-prod model at Comdex in November. The concept is great, but on my Prismo w/ the USB ports on the back the light doesn't reach far enough around the computer to be useful.

    Built In.

Can't they just build a light in to the top of the screen like in IBM's T21 series?

My work issued T21 has a built in LED and it's very useful at night.
