    Oh God...

Nick DePlume from Think Secret wrote that? Take it with a HUGE grain of salt.

ZDNet is really scraping the bottom of the barrel these days for content.

    What Happened To...?

The Tyson's Corner area just outside Washington, DC...? I seem to recall that location was mentioned a scant few weeks ago, but now it appears to have been dropped from the list! Since I'm right outside the door in Manassas, VA, I'm interested in hearing if anyone knows the status of that earlier report... or was it simply a rumor??

    Retail Strategy? or Not?

Just curious if anyone here has any idea of Apple's retail "strategy." Or is interested in speculating on what kind of 'services' might be offered at Apple stores...

I mean, we all know that Apple has a very small segment of the computer market, and that they'd like that to change, right? The computers they make are damn s***, OS X is gorgeous & offers a h*** of a lot of cool potential under it's hood, and I honestly believe that if they can get people in the door, they will sell a lot of their machines.

But how do they get them in the door in the first place? Part of Apple's problem is that people don't think of Macs as "real" computers, so why would they come in? Maybe Apple will-

    1) market their stores as free internet cafes (with a spiffy showroom attached). People could come in, sit down at a row of iMacs and surf & e-mail to their hearts content. Maybe even swing by & look at the TiBook or the Cube on their way out. (The cube looks damn cool up close, I don't care what anyone says). I've even read (on one of these threads) that with OS X people could have their own "accounts" that they could use every time they came in. Great for travelers, too!
    2) what about adding a little coffee bar into the mix? (not too close to the spiffy showroom, though)

How else could they get people in?

    My Prediction: X Update

My feeling is Apple is not going to announce something new without making some good news for X as well. And wasn't the ability to play DVDs supposed to come to X in April? May 1st isn't April, but it's close enough for me.

    Digital Lifestyle info

Personally, I'm expecting a major announcement. The booking of the Flint Center, a location so important in Apple history, and the choice of May 1st suggest that we're going to get something big.

I'm expecting to hear a number of different announcements: OS X 10.0.2 (with "Power to Burn"), new iBooks, the retail stores, and perhaps more information on their education plans. More than that, I think we're going to find out more about Jobs's master plan for Apple; there are still a lot of blanks in the "digital lifestyle" idea that are waiting to be filled.

Did you notice how the announcement of this event came just after Apple's Q2 earnings report? Perhaps Steve plans to string out these little announcements all year long, to keep Apple's name in the news and maintain suspense.

    Retail Idea Sucks!

    putting on flame-proof skivvies...

does anyone else thing the idea of retail Apple stores are a huge waste of money? I mean come on.... you have huge rent to pay in trendy areas like Savannah and the SoHo district of NYC, you have to pay retail staff, you have to pay more for *good* [like Tekserv good] repair folks... I don't think selling a few imacs a day will be able to cover *rent* in NYC, let alone keep the retail store profitable. I'd like to see this whole thing stopped before it becomes a drain on the cash reserves of Apple. of course I wish them well, but c'mon look at Gateway... they just closed a $hitload of stores, do you really think Apple will do better?

I wish them all the luck in the world, but I hope this doesn't become a cash suck as much as I think it will
