Apple/Handspring bundle expected soon?

One MacNN reader notes that Apple's Czech Republic Web site has updated its main page with an image of a PowerBook G4 and Handspring Visor Edge, which takes you to a PowerBook/Edge bundle page. Other Apple sites, including the US site, have not been updated to reflect the new promotion. Due to the language barrier, details of the promotion are unclear.

Different markets

Lots of companies sell different variations of products to different market segments.

In the East Coast-ish part of the US you can get 3-liter bottles of Coke/Pepsi.

Yet here in the Southwest we have no such item.

Some foods are even labelled with different brand names on the two ends of the country.

If Apple has a promotion somewhere for a Visor and PBG4, it doesn't automatically imply EVERYONE will have the same promo.

Translation

The home page says . . .

"Do you want to but a Powerbook G4? Then buy a complete mobile solution--The Powerbook G4 & Visor Edge."

On the bundle page . . .

"The bundle of the Powerbook G4 together with the pocket organizer Visor Edge costs 128,000 crowns (approx $3,200) and 168,000 (approx $4,200) for the 500 Mhz version amd is only valid until April 30, 2001 and only when bought from one of these authorized sellers.

This bundle is not for a used or a floor model. It is valid in the Czech Republic and according to the aforementioned conditions."

PB update

as the offer is only valid uintil 30th april it suggests an update of the PB. In the US demand is so high that I doubt that they need to do a promotion to move inventry. If one believes the comments on Apple Insider today and the new iBook will come with a CDRW/DVD combo (Not super drive) then they would have to announce the same drive for the PB on the 1st may too.

Hey that would be awesome, maybe an Apple branded Visor. I'd buy it! Also, it was probably just an April Fools Joke, but did anyone see that PR about Apple making an OS X Springboard module that lets your Visor run OS X? Any possibility of this having to do with the module? Anyhoo, I really wonder what Apple is going to do, because they do have a license of the Palm OS.

Hey Just an idea

Hey, I was just throwing out ideas. Even if it was a joke, it would be awesome. I mean pull out a little computer from you pocket, slap the OS X module in and say, hey! Look at the most advanced OS in the world, in my pocket! Heeheehee take that Pocket PC. (Sorry, back from heaven) I suspect that this has nothing to do with May 1, because when have we ever known Apple to do something and foreshadow an event on another Apple.com/cz/whatever site? They never let something slip like that. Remember what Steve did to ATI when they let slip about the Cube???

Again, new iBooks, but unfortunately, not a Palm-OS thing.

Dear colleagues,

as a Czech citizen and a long-time Apple user (recently owning G4/733 with SuperDrive) I can clear that situation finally for your complete understanding. The company called CDS, which is a Czech Apple Importer is a Visor Importer too. So they just made a promotion combining their two business interests :o) I expect this offerings to disappear when an Apple-branded handheld is finally introduced - they will not want to interfere with Apple business plans I think. Long live the Apple ! Yours CybeR.

For non Eastern Europe

Apple USA and Apple IMC in Czech are completely different companies. Companies like HDS in Hungary or SAD in Poland are independent companies, getting almost no support from Apple. Apple just sells boxes to them. Ok, some support. So they are searching how to expand their business and survive. They can do everything what does not interfere with Apple strategy. Their websites don't belong to Apple. Other companies like IBM or HP have representative ofises even in smaller countries like Lithuania.

European distibutors are independent and are usually poorly supported by Apple . . . CDS in Prague and SAD in Budapest are particularly idiotic. If I order a product in Bratislava it should come from Prague--and it does . . but it goes to a warehouse in Budapest first. The shipment MUST drive through Bratislava on it's way to Budapest---why the wasted travel??????

Customer service is poor and technical support is mediocre. Expect to "tip" anyone who is competent enough to help you out of any predicament . . . .
