IBM plans to introduce a 20.8-inch flat-panel display in May that will feature picture-in-picture TV streams and various split-screen configurations. While slightly smaller than Apple's Cinema Display, the display will feature a 2048x1536 resolution, or almost twice the resolution and working area of Apple's offering. The display will sell for around $6,000.

    working area? nah.

nah, instead of working area, it would be nice to start seeing the move to higher densities...along with OS support for it. a move to 144dpi would be great for screens. IBM's been known to be trying to make high resolution displays for the past few years, I think they've achieved 200dpi in experimental displays already!

    Um, d'uhh...

Working area is defined by the # of pixels... IBM's resolution (# of pixels) is twice that of Apple's... therefore, twice the working area...

    resolution

72 ppi was chosen long ago for a very good reason. It means a pixel very closely approximates a typesetter's point. Moving away from 72 ppi is bad news for the publishing industry.

    my eyes!

I would love to have that much pixel area--but my eyes won't take a tight DPI for long. For most people, bigger pixels are better (up to a point).

    2 x pixels = 2 x price

I'd rather get two of the Cinema displays for the same price. Then you'll get working area where you can actually read the text.

In case you haven't figured it, this display will look *great* under OS X, which consumed roughly 25% more screen area than OS 9 and earlier. On my PowerBook's 14.1" 1024x768 72dpi screen, I feel like I'm back in front of an old 800x600 display. All the fonts and window widgets are bigger... and don't forget all the anti-aliasing effects that OS X uses.

    re: OS X

    Thank you!!!

When the PowerBook G4 came out with a measly 128 horizontal pixels of improvement over the Pismo, me and a lot of people here voiced their disappoinment at the lack of at least a built-to-order option for higher resolution. The naysayers all went "You can't see anything that small!". I said "OS X has antialiased-vectorized text, you can".

Well, turns out I was right. The IBM is the first of many. I'm pretty sure LCDs will become more and more popular (didn't Apple go ahead with LCDs before anyone else ;)) and the resolutions will double over the next couple of years. And OS X will look gorgeous. In fact, the antialiased text sometimes looks bad now it the display resolution is low because there aren't enough pixels available to make smooth transitions.

    mmmm, more pixel density!

This finally rivals decent 21" CRTs! Now for the 1:6 CRT:LCD price discrepancy... but, this is great news for all displays, desktop & laptop!

    Needs time

This is a very nice product announcement.
Obviously needs time before the price comes down.
I'd love to have one of these.

I wonder who would buy it at those prices now?

    RE: OS X

I am totally agree with you. I first played the Mac OS X DP4 on my iMac Rev.A till the 2E14 build. Now, I installed the retail version of OS X on my TiPB G4/400. I feel like I lost some real estate.
