Tech: Sun closing for one week in July

updated 06:20 pm EDT, Wed April 25, 2001

Evening tech news: Sun Microsystems will shut down for a week in July and is asking its employees to take holidays or unpaid leave during that period in order to control costs and preserve funding for research and development; Intel CEO Craig Barrett suggests that Moore's Law—which states that computing power will double every 12 to 18 months—has far outlived initial expectations and that it will likely be unsustainable within 10 to 20 years; and a new study predicts that the number of shipments of Bluetooth-enabled devices will grow 360 percent each year between now and 2005, which will result in shipments of 955 million Bluetooth-enabled devices in 2005.

    Moore's Law

does no one actually read this law... it states that the number of transistors on a chip will double every 12 - 18 months, not the processor speed. if we held to that, we'd be pretty close to the terra-hz range now.

    Moore's Law

Specifially, the number of transistors on a given area, for the same price, will approx. double every approx 12-18 months. For example (and forgive my truly ridiculus numbers):
$5 gets me a square inch of silicon with 200 transistors on it, in January 2001. The same $5 will get me the same square inch in January-June 2002, but with 400 transistors instead of 200. Again, the numbers are off by several orders of magnitude, but you get the idea.
Moores' Law says NOTHING about clock speed, and certainly not about throughput.

Sun Microsystems will shut down for a week in July...kinda like my old high school. Is that when they polish the hallway floors to a shiny lustre?

    Shipments

Let's see, there were 10 devices sold this year, so that means there'll be ...hmmm, damn, wish I had a calculator....46 next year and then, well, lets just say 360 percent of very little still leads very little.
