David Freeland reports on Apple's QT 5.01 update: "QuickTime 5.0.1 is out if you use a 4.x updater. The Peview 3 updater reports no new version." (QT 5 Preview 3 is still available at Apple's Website.) [unconfirmed]

    Quicktime 5.01 is here

QT 5.01 is indeed out, I just ran the updater on my QT4.12 and it said a new version is available. Installed fine, one caveat - my QT 3/4 serial number does not enable the pro capabilities. Had to spend another 29 bucks. Would be nice if Apple could at least have offered us users that paid once a minimal discount - alas.......

    Yup, it is out!

    5.01 is out.

If you have the preview 3 installed, just uninstall it and download and run the QuickTime 4 installer, it will give you QuickTime 5.01

    Annoying Message

Is there a way to turn off the annoying "Upgrade to Pro" message? I currently have the Pro version of QT4. I will not pay to upgrade to QT5 Pro and will not upgrade to QT5 free if it means the annoying message.

I have friends with PCs that hate using QT because of the annoying ad every time they launch QT. WMP and Real don't require a click-thru ad, why does Apple? No obvious way to get rid of the ad.

    Re:QuickTime 5.01 is here

QuickTime 5.01 has three modes, the free mode, the QT 3/4 Pro mode, and the new QT 5 Pro mode. QT 5 recognizes your old QT 3/4 registration number. I have no idea what differences exist among the various modes.

    Ad removal machine

There is a longstanding method of removing the ad, which should still work in 5.x. Set your clock to a date far in the future (I just move the year to 2019 or so) and then do something to load Quicktime - open a movie or whatever. The ad will appear one last time. Now set your clock back to the real date, and you won't be troubled again (until 2019, by which time they may have released a new version anyway). Works for both Mac and Windows boxes.

Explanation: since the ad "only" appears once per day, it needs to save the last date on which it appeared and compare it with the current one (it does this every single time Quicktime loads). By guaranteeing the saved date is newer than yesterday, you elude the stupid timewasting ad.

If anyone from the Apple Quicktime ad would like to use this posting (or any other mention of this trick you've seen on the net) as a reason to work around this feature so that the ad can't be disabled this way, I refer you to the unsolicited submission policy at http://www.apple.com/legal/. Consider the idea submitted, and have a nice day. PS: you should be ashamed of yourselves for not getting rid of that repetitious, annoying ad by now.

    I’m confused.

The ads are annoying to you, yet you “submitted” the idea to them. This allows them to utilize it in any way they wish including incorporating a workaround.

    Good idea Einstein.
