Next week at NAB, ADS Technologies will unveil its new PYRO 1394 DVD-R/RW drive, which features the third-generation DVD recorder from Pioneer (the same mechanism used in Apple's SuperDrive). The FireWire device will be available in late June for just over $1,000.

G4 looks good value
If this external drive will sell for $1000, then getting one with a whole, top-end G4 computer around it for $3,500 is not bad value.
But getting a DVD-R with a G4 will look even better value once Apple adds it to their build-to-order options, as they almost certainly will by the summer.
You're almost going to need to dedicate a G4 to DVD production anyway, as even with accelerated software, it still takes the computer 2 hours to process 1 hour of video. Plus you want it set up for hassle-free production.
Apple have priced their DVD solution extremely well.
