updated 05:45 pm EDT, Fri April 20, 2001
Evening tech news: For the first time in seven years, the personal computer market has shrunk in the U.S. with a 3.5 percent contraction in the first quarter of 2001; more tech companies are taking steps to protect themselves against hostile takeovers, with many companies seeing slumping market valuations that are worth less than the company's assets; and South Korea is fast becoming the most wired country in the world, with more than 26,000 Internet cafes and a broadband market penetration of 57 percent, more than five times the penetration of broadband in the U.S.
