Steve Jobs to kick off WWDC 2001

Apple has announced that CEO Steve Jobs will kick off the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2001 with a "fireside chat" with developers on Monday, May 21 at 9:30 AM at the San Jose Convention Center. The $1,600 per-person, five-day event—which will be focused almost exclusively on Mac OS X—is expected to be sold out with developers looking to learn more about technical issues and development tools for the new operating system.

It is all about the cow patches. I am hoping that they announce custom macs too, as I could see large universities wanting to have "their mark" on a mac. Of course stickers are cheaper, but come on! School colors, etc are a nice touch... how tough could it be? (Pretty darn tough, but a guy can dream)

More software

Hey guys why would you always want new hardware? We Mac users must realize that software is far more important than hardware? Can you imagine having a quad GHZ PowerMac G4 and there are no serious software to run on it including the OS! Apple biggest problem was always and still is not having a large collection of software titles. I know there are about 18k listed on the products guide, but to succeed we need serious big players from the unix and NT world. So lets give Apple both hands this year with Mac OSX and leave the new hardware for next year.

Apple probably could sell a ton of them.
Thats where apple needs to take the iMac, modular design in the BTO so you can pick the color/design you want.

No hardware at WWDC

Last year at WWDC 2000, Phil Schiller made it undoubtedly clear that Apple does not make new hardware product announcements at WWDC. This, of course, is different from a new hardware demonstration, as they demonstrated the MP G4s last year before they were actually announced as products.

It seems to me that the hardware and software are equally important. While it is certainly true that the hardware isn't very useful without software to run on it, it is equally true that the software isn't too useful without hardware to run it on.

And there is nothing more wonderful than when the hardware and software are designed for each other.

The important thing about the Mac is neither the hardware nor the software. It is the integration of the two that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts

Gee, what a nice gesture by Steve to "honor" us with his presense after paying
$1,600+ (hotels, etc) to come hear about YOUR new OS....ya, it's worth the cash, but it shouldn't be a big announcement, it should be "expected"

First of all, the world wide DEVELOPERS conference. If you are not a developer, the $1600 must certainly seem like a ripoff. But, if you are a developer and you want to find our about all the cool stuff you can do with Cocoa and how it can help you write the best software in the world, then it's a small price to pay.

Forget about the possibility of new hardware announcements. That is not the purpose of WWDC. My guess is that we can expect news about OSX versions of apps like Final Cut Pro, Maya, and probably Photoshop.

Get a helmet steve

I really think the keynote is not going to be Webcast. Steve is the guy who said developers last year at WDDC that MacOS X was developer complete in the DP3. Well the problem is that it was completly in development at this moment and it's still not finished. He really should not begin a chat with developers, he's going to discover that they are not affected by his distorsion reality field.

What about clip-on covers for a cover-less "base" iMac, like the clip-on colors for scanners and headphones and cell-phones? And make them changeable too, so that you could switch colors weekly.

Apple has consistently said that they don't announce products at WWDC. In the past this has been true. The original iMac was announced a few days before WWDC so that WWDC could show it off. The HW Keynote is usually Tuesday morning and sometimes they show "technology" demos which never show up as is as products.

WWDC is worth it

WWDC is well worth the $1600 entry price (plus expenses) if you are a developer. Not only do you get to learn about new directions for your favorite technologies, but you get to ask and talk with Apple Managers and Engineers and provide feedback directly to them. In addition, it is the premier place to swap business cards and do personal networking for devcelopers. and if you hang with the right guys you can eat some serious Thai as well. And yes, even developers are affected by Steve's "Reality Distortion Field" (patent pending). I was on a flight from Salt Lake City to San Jose last year the day before WWDC started (flew on Sunday). The flight was oversold and they were offering $800 to get bumped, but they couldn't guarantee alternate flights to get you there before noon on Monday. No body volunteered. Everyone on the friggin' plane did not want to miss Steve talk at the keynote.
