    Link Broken

A directory listing on that path (ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobatreader/mac/5.x/) yields nothing.

    this intaller is s***

    hi!

after a 20min download.... let me say here that i usually regret web installers right away.... the installer stopped trying to communicate with some router adress 0.0.0.0 which caused strange macos error messages.
isnīt that strange... adobe goes microsoft or what?
i had to cancel, and i will NOT try it again.

Adobe = moron when it com

The Installer is a classic Installer. I don't know what kind of moron can make a classic installer for a Carbon Application (may be the same one which did the Lightwave Installer)

Well, after 20 minutes of download, 4 attempts (the installer tends to fail in the middle of a download), the installer was able to launch and worked.

The resulting folder is really a nightmare. Nobody at Adobe seems to be aware that the new way to package applications for MacOS X is to have one single file (and in case a PlugIn folder). Why the h*** do I have 7 files, 7 folders within the Acrobat Reader folder ?

At least, the application is working great (except for some cosmetic bugs on the left part (thumbs and bookmarks)).

May the Adobe packaging team/guy learn how to do it properly for the other sotfwares releases

    It is agreed.

This is just foolishness. This installer is based on VISE, which works great as a carbon app on X (http://www.mindvision.com for details). Why they used 6.5 and not the carbon compatible versions is beyond me.

I suppose the b******* have their reasons.

Do We Need It In OS X?

Yes, to all of the above! Having a Classic installer for a Carbon application is really stupid, not to mention the fact that the installer installs a bunch of files rather than a single package.

But do we even need this application in OS X is my question. Support for pdf files is built into X, and they will open just fine with the application, Preview.

    Not worth the download

    Download/instalation worked fine.
Memory footprint is huge (12 M, twice as much as for vesion 4.0.X with my PB1400, 8.6 with VM on), functionality is the same as for version 4.0.X. Some cosmetic improvments (platinum menus). Not worth the download, at least for me. Back to vesion 4.0.5 (for now).

    Program is Okay

One must admit that although it isn't as "clean" as Acrobat Reader 4, it does have a few nice features. I am sure that a bug fix will sort out a few things. It is, though, not the most organized installation process and the installer used boggles the mind. Perhaps they will sort this out fast since they aren't really advertising it yet. Perhaps.

    Needed with Mac OS X?

My question: why bother using it with Mac OS X? The 'Preview' application does a great job of displaying PDFs anyway. Or have they extended the format since Preview was made so there'll possibly be some files that won't work?

Make sure you check your preferences in Reader so that you're not broadcasting your computer ID and computer name. Adobe had this defaulted on in the last version.
