QuickTime 5 Preview 3 expiring soon

QuickTime 5 Public Preview 3, which we earlier noted expires April 15, will continue to function until April 30, a QuickTime engineer has informed us. The license agreement expires on April 15, however.

Hey... How come nobody told me about QT 5 Preview? I'm gonna go download it and play with it for the next 24 hrs.

I agree... This'll be interesting. I can't wait for the tech support calls to start rolling in on all the Macintosh Resellers. Quite frankly, if you don't know what you're doing don't upgrade without asking for friendly advice from a friendly VAR near you.

In general... They'll say don't update to preview software for general users. Whew!

Okay so Apple released QT 5 Preview 2 which expired. Now this guy goes and downloads Preview 3 and starts using like a final release..he has no-one to blame but himself. Honestly, what did he expect...Preview means exactly that!

FCP 2 shipped with QTPP

Well....Apple THEMSELVES must be expecting people to use QTPP with their "day jobs" because Final Cut Pro 2 shipped with QuickTime Public Preview and doesn't work without it!

Mind you...this isn't FCP 2 beta or FCP2 "Public Preview," it is a one thousand dollar piece of SHIPPING software.

Take a step back before jumping all over some poor schlub who constructively criticizes our favorite fruit company.

QT vs. WMP

Much against my will, I recently downloaded the Windows Media Player 7 Mac edition. While it is yet ANOTHER tasteless hack wannabe of an Apple product (the Quicktime Movie Player), I can't help but to observe the fact that it does full screen playback of ASF video quite well. The playback is very M$-esque, with glitches and unessesary pauses in normal window mode.

I am curious as to everyone's opinion of WMP vs QTplayer...

Sorry for this post being a little off subject, but its something that may have a lot to do with Apple's latest video player stratagies...

Is Apple even AWARE that in less than 48 hours, QuickTime 5 Public Preview 3 will begin expiring on people's computers (April 15, as noted in the license agreement)??

So you knew ahead of time. You planned for this possibility, right?

If you are using free, buggy, pre-release software for production work, and have no backup plan, you're a cheap fool.

No one put a gun to your head and made you download bleeding-edge code that could -- who knows -- maybe even corrupt your file system. No, you just couldn't resist downloading and installing a new toy. Listen up, buddy -- we early adopters don't whine when we are given new stuff to evaluate. We do great demos for friends, colleagues, and customers, evangelizing the technology. We tread carefully over rough spots. We give great feedback to the developer. And maybe if you do that last bit seriously, Apple will one day offer you seed versions that have longer timeouts, and even more jagged, untested, dangerous, but otherwise KEWL features.

Why not use the old mac shareware standby of changing the damn date in ye ole date & time control panel. Problem fixed 'til "par for the course" slow old apple gets its a** in gear.

Relax, It will work.

As I recall the most time someone was without their QT5 was about 24 hours. Like you I like the new QT and think it is the best one yet. Have some faith and relax. Apple has and will come through.

I really wonder if you smart guys with all the answers would be so vitriolic in a face to face conversation. If so, I'd suspect you have a permanent broken nose and a black eye. QT4 is a dog compared to QT5 and I have no desire to revert. It's also mildy annoying when my Mac won't startup. One of the reasons I frequent this page, to cut down on surprises like this.

QT5 is still BETA software... any professional with any reasonable amount of intelligence would never "rely" on beta software for a living. If you've been using QT5 in production and have not made some sort of contingency plan for when it expires... then you deserve what you get.

Get over it buddy, the helpless victim scenario does not work. You made a conscious decision to use QuickTime 5 for something other than for what it was intended. Now deal with the consequences and stop blaming Apple.

boo hoo? still BETA?

Downloaded?

Other than what it was intended for??

It came on a $1000 CD that shipped from Apple. The product will not work without QT5 installed.

(Also, don't worry about us. We are not entirely hapless; we have a contingency plan. Apple just needs to get its act together with its expiration dates when its FINAL SHIPPING software requires BETA software to run,)

That's funny. I bought FCP 2 and my version of QuickTime doesn't mention anything about being a preview release or expiring. If this thing does expire I can guarantee Apple will be getting a good thrashing and not just from me.

Oh, and for those of you who are wondering, the combination of QT 5 and FCP 2 is not enough to do real-time effects editing. You still need to render unless you have added some sort of hardware based solution.

Make your time.

I ran the Quicktime updater two days ago, and it updated the whole QT5 package (last week, parts were also updated) to 5.0.1b19

ADC release not affected

if you have downloaded the beta installer from Apple's Developer Connection site (free for online account), it will not expire. Also, it is newer than the Preview 3 version. Be aware that it will *NOT* allow you to use a 3.x or 4.x serial number to upgrade to 5 Pro unless you bought your copy after October of last year.

Regardless of how much it cost... you still made the decision to purchase software that relied another component that is still at the BETA release. The only person you can legitimately blame for your situation is YOURSELF. Perhaps you should have waited until everything was in its final form. If there was some other compelling reason for you to purchase FCP, then you must have thought that the risk of an expired version of QuicTime - or the possibility of some running to major problems with the BETA software was worth it.

So stop complaining and get over it.

The final version will be out soon. If you think that Apple's engineers are sitting around the coffee pot or rollerblading in the parking lot instead of getting QT5 ready for release then you have some serious problems.

no, despite being the people who wrote the software, Apple has absolutely no idea when the preview will expire. they're totally oblivious, and dependent on drama queens and anal retentives such as yourself to alert them to such situations.

do i remember how much chaos the expiration of the last preview release caused? no, not exactly. i remember a lot of people freaking out and whining about it. and i remember Apple posting the Preview 3 update on the day of 2's expiration (if not on the exact day, it was certainly within 24 hours). i didn't experience a single problem on my PowerBook or on my G4.

to those using FCP2, while i'm sure that you may be concerned, i would imagine that Apple has you covered. they either: A. have the update ready for release before expiration of Preview 2; B. gave you a copy of QT5 that won't expire like the common Public Preview.

someone else brought up an interesting point: is it the software that expires on the 15th, or just the license?

I'll bet you show up at fire scenes, and rant at the survivors about how they shouldn't be living in wood-frame houses. "You KNEW that wood burns. The only person you can legitimately blame for this is YOURSELF." Or people that just got hit by a bus: "They KNEW that buses drive on this road. If they didn't want to get hit, they shouldn't have crossed the street. The only persons they can legitimately blame are THEMSELVES."

If they indeed payed Apple $1000 for a final version of a product - it should work, and shouldn't expire. Period. Presumably, Apple assumed that they'd have the final version (or another preview version) out when they set up this end date, and they don't. Therefore, Apple should fix it. Please, I love the company, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't hold them to at least a minimum level of customer service.

As has been pointed out many times --

FINAL CUT PRO 2.0 WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT QuickTime 5!

Yes, yes, QT5 is still "beta", but Final Cut Pro 2.0 is not beta!. That means Apple is about to leave its paying customers (mind you, that's customers who paid for a final, shipping version of FCP2) high and dry because of this expiration date!

And yes, those people who paid money for a final, shipping version of FCP2 have every right to expect that it will keep working and not expire. They are not "whining", they are expecting to get what they paid for!

Automatic Soft Update?

I ran into sites that state "requires QuicikTime 5" - one of which was a banking site of all things.

Seems there is plenty of foolishness to go around.

Apple and its Software Update technology was a waste of manpower trying to emulate what other vendors had been doing. this would be one place. OS X has an automatic check for QT updates also.

if Apple released Quictime 5 for Final Cut Pro 2 and OS X, why don't they just release the final for "the rest of us"? I mean the damn thing has been public beta for over six months! Enough already. QT 5 Expiration

I've just reset the date on my Mac to April 15 (and April 20) and QT 5 Preview 3 works fine. When I reset it to May 15, I get a message on startup that says QuickTime has expired, please visit www.apple.com/quicktime/download for a new version.

The sky is not falling yet. Or, in the immortal words of John Cusack, "Dude. You must chill."

who cares?! It's called a public preview for a reason!! It's not like they gave you a piece of software, like iMovie or iTunes and said "oh sorry, we're gonna have to take that back on Sunday". If you're relying on a public preview for a business or whatever, that was your mistake, not Apple's.

Oh how horible, maybe for 3 hours you wont be able to edit a movie. Dear god, how will you live with yourself? Apple knows perfectly well that it expires. But how can you be so mad at Apple, it wont even be a full day, that's if they dont realease it tommarow. Do you sit at FCP2 and state at it's pretty interfaces? Go outside, go somewhere.... It will be a god damned sunday after all... We all know EVERYONE works on sundays.

QT PP3 vs FCP2 QT

Let me clear something out. QT PP3 is the public preview, thus it will expire, although I'm not sure when it will.

QT that ships with FCP is QT5 RT. Whatever RT stands for I'm not sure, but QT5RT is the QT meant for using FCP, not QT5PP3.

Note that all the extensions on my computer are 5.0 not 5.0b#

This is Sad

I have been a Mac User for 8 years now, and Have always prided myself on the fact that Mac Users are friendlier, nicer, more intelligent and more helpful than the avg PC user, especially to Other Mac Users...

However, This and a few other messages lately has shot that concept down the tubes.

The person spent $1,000 on software. He is/was afraid it would be disabled on the 15th. Legitimate reason for worry... I would too, I read the documention for FCP2 when they released it and Didnt see anything initially about QT5 being used in it. If I bought it I would not have been aware of it using Beta Technology until I installed it. He made a mistake, or Apple didn't make it clear enough.

Either way, all these people who are calling this person an idiot, or a moron, or a cry baby etc, are all these things themselves because they would rather trash this person then agree they are stuck in a Bad situation.

Jeff made an entirely Valid point, several in fact, and someone had to show the maturity of a 12 year old and say to STFU.

Why? Is he wrong? do you know something he doesn't? Then tell us, just cursing at someone anonymously on a Message board is the act of a coward, and a weak mind.

Grow up people, this guy is 100% within his rights to be concerned about his FCP2 not working. It may still work regardless, but if you paid 1,000 for software and a few weeks later you got wind it might not work in a day or two, you cannot say you wouldnt be mad. REGARDLESS of the status of the underlying technology.

Drive-by

Messages appended to stories are done anonymously and therefore you get a lot of drive-by flame and trolls. Intelligent (usually) discussions can be found in the actual MacNN forums. Where you have to have a name of some sort. Just a thought...

Also. I think Apple is learning. There's now a 15 day delay between license expiration and software expiration, which probably means that they are fully aware of the number of people who use QT5. They cut it pretty fine with PP2, and I imagine they set up PP3 to give them some more breathing room.

As to the people with FCP2, I think Jeff probably hit the nail on the head. QT5 is final enough for OS X and FCP2, and those copies won't expire. There are probably just still some things that need to be nailed down before the whole enchilada can be called final.

Quicktime 5 releases are not belong to QT 5 RT that comes with FCP 2.

The QT 5 RT (which stands for Real Time) included with FCP 2 will not expire. There would be so much h*** to pay from the FCP customers that Apple would implode.

Wrong, Final Cut Pro 2 shipped with QuickTime RT 5.0, a non-preview release. Apple is now working on a final release for the general public which will probably be called 5.0.1.

Public Preview HA!

Like the others have said about it being a preview, sure it is but it is very stable vs any Windows Media Player Public Beta release. QTPP 3 is still quite stable than other stuff out there, right now I've been using the "developer builds" and its just as stable or even better compared to the current preview or QT4... slightly faster load time and crisper colour. Some of you always have to find something to start crying about even when its outlined during download of being limited time Preview.

I upgraded the developer version and now my version 3 and version 4 keys are no good. Drat. Well, at least it's only $30. I wish Apple would give you a discount for buying both the Windows and Mac OS keys together.

Maybe I'll wait until 5 is officially out in case I get a 5.x/6.x key. :-]

Now if you guys think this is serious, I can't wait to see windowz XP expirieing and refusing to boot if you don't send your info to M$ within a month, I think someone wrote a crack for XP already....... so if quicktime expires the crack would be a matter of resedit, no big deal.......
