Loki considers Tribes 2 for Mac OS X

Ben Hines notes that Loki Software, who is best known in gaming circles for porting many popular games to the Linux platform, is considering expanding its Linux port of Tribes 2 to include a Mac OS X port. "We certainly understand the value of opening this potential market, and are considering adding support for this operating system," said Loki's Kayt Sorhaindo. "Should this occur, we will issue announcements on our website and to the press." Dynamix Software's Tribes 2 is a first-person shooter that features squad-based combat, vehicles and a seamless transition between indoor environments and wide-open, outdoor terrain. Garagegames.com, which was founded by former members of Dynamix Software, is licensing the Tribes 2 engine to developers for a small fee and has also expressed interest in porting the game to the Mac.

    Uhh . . .

Tribes is a first person game - you can probably change it to third person, but the primary, default view is first person.

    I heard

I keep hearing the PC release is c***. This from PC users themselves. Electronic Boutique says it has the highest return rate for any game.

I wonder if they can clean up the game when they port it.

    nice one

As a former sierra employee and one who beta tested Mac Half-Life I'd like to be the first to say:

It's about damn time someone started doing this since all the software companies are complete IDIOTS when it comes to developing and RELEASING software for the Mac.

If the company doesn't want to do it because they gave too much mindshare to MS and now lack the skills and equipment to develop quality apps, FINE. Just open source the code for gods sake so we can PLAY something besides Bingo Bingo Bingo.

    PLEASE!!!

I'm playing Tribes 2 on my PC right now... but I'm dying to play it on my nice G4!

If your reading these comments Loki, please do a Mac version, I'll gladly pay in advance!

The other game I spend far too much time with is Half-Life-Counter-Strike. That is one addictive game. If only we had the Half-Life engine on the Mac they could port the mod over so we could also play Counter Strike.... ah sigh...

Any chance of getting Half-Life opened up or given to Loki so it could be finished?

    about the returns

People were returning the cd after installing it becasue it only required the cd key. They just released a patch to require the cd. People do this with other games such as diablo as well. Thats why is has a high return rate.

    Ambivalent

I had really wanted this game fo rthe Mac as well. Then I read all the problems PC users were having. Contrary to a previous post, the returns were not caused merely by a single problem. the PC version had 3 patches within the first few days of release. Go to the Tribes2 forum or read a recent article on Slashdot about the kinds f problems people have had.

Add the incredibly high actual hardware requirements and I am sceptical this game will run well on any system. Certainly not on my G4 I bought less than a year ago.

Regardlless, I do hope Loki can get an OSX version going. I would buy it if it is a stable game that doesn't require a GeForce3 and a dual processor machine to run. I would also like to encourage loki to port more games to OSX. I really do think theyd have more income from Mc users than Linux users. let's hope if Loki does port, it won't take 6-12 months by which time the interest will have likely diminished.

Loki games for Mac = $$

Loki should totally hop on the Mac game trail!!
    Why?

Mac users actually purchase their games - I saw the Loki booth at Linkx World (great bunch of guys!) but I heard countless linux drones whining that the "source wasn't FREE" and "Why wasn't the software FREE???" and other comments that they expected every piece of software in the world to be free, like that OS they so cherish.

    Free games = dead Loki.

Mac users buying games = happy Loki. Loki happy? Loki make MORE Mac games. Mac gamers happy? Mac gamers buy MORE games that Loki make.
    See how it works? :)
