    Firewire depot drives

I once considered OEMing these drives myself but decided not to. Specificaslly, their SK line of 2.5 and 3.5in USB and Firewire drives are OEm'ed by a company called Sarotech in Korea. http://www.sarotech.com/cgi/main.cgi?scr=downloads&lgg=eng

I tried to use the 2.5in USB drive and couldn't get it to work.

The 3.5in Firewire drive is OK and I do use that one frequently. It works fine with Drive Setup that comes with OS 9.1 and also works with OS X natively. No other driver is necessary. The case is plastic and the screws that hold the case together are stripped easily. Otherwise the case is nice and portable and works well.

I don't know about any of the other FireWire Depot drives.

    electricdeal.com

I've got 2 of the electricdeal.com USB/FW combo drives (pocket pup II). They are the Sarotech enclosures as well. So far so good. $130 for the case from them AND you get a USB port out of it. Responsive customer service both times i called. BTW, Heat works with these cases.

    Also check out Firewiredi

Firewiredirect.com also has 2.5" enclosures for about $110. I'm using one with a 10GB disk I took out of my Ti PB G4. Works great under Mac OS X. The enclosure can be bus powered, but also comes with a separate power adapter in case you need it. I run the drive bus powered on my PB G4 which is better than lugging around a power brick.

    Size matters

If it's thicker than my PowerBook than I'm not interested. Can't any vendor make a thin enclosure?

    where are new bridge chip

I also have a case from electricdeals.com their 'pocket pup' case has been working great for me. I posted info about it on my website at:

    http://www.sentman.com/reviews/pocketpup.html

I'm saving for one of those new 40+ gig IBM drives that are coming this summer and I'll be moving my current 30 gig into a new case. But I really would like to get one based on that new firewire bridge chip so that it can use more of the FW bandwidth. Does anyone know when these companies are planning to update their cases?

    new chips coming

The electricdeals pocket pup is the same enclosure that FireWire Direct sells (thats where electricdeals got the idea from)

the new enclosure from FireWire Depot is about the same thickness as the PBG4 (when closed)

the new Oxford 911 chips will start showing up in enclosures within the next 30-60 days - they will a benefit of 3.5" drive users most, but the new higher speed 2.5" IBM drives due later this year will also benefit from the new chips.
