Apple eyes Syracuse as retail store location

updated 09:00 am EDT, Thu April 5, 2001

Following our news item yesterday confirming that Apple has signed a lease in Chicago as part of its retail store strategy, an article in Syracuse's Post-Standard states that Apple is considering signing a deal with Mall developer The Pyramind Cos. that would result in the opening of an Apple store at the Carousel Center mall in Syracuse, "as well as a few other Pyramid properties."

    Getting bigger & bigger

Seems like this whole retail thing is going to be HUGE. Never mind organic growth of a few stores, it seems like Jobs is going to bet a big part of the company on this retail strategy. I really, really, hope it works. I can't wait to try out the stores, I just hope it's going to attract a lot of non-Mac users as well, otherwise it's going to cost a fortune in return for a bit of margin that Aplle will save over using resellers.

There will need to be more than the 5 main Apple products to get people in. They'll need stuff that draws in regular small purchasers who will take time to view the great hardware and see the OS in opperation.

    service needed

Computer retail experience is really bad right now. Walk in to any CompUSA and there's a 50% chance that you'll get poor service. Even higher if you're looking for assistance purchasing a Mac. Some people go in looking for Mac solutions and run into sales reps that try to steer them toward WinTel. Apple's on the right track. Profitability is another issue. Perhaps they'll salvage sales that CompUSA would s**** up.

    mmm..yeah

they should sell all the mac parafinalia ( i have no idea how to spell that, but i know thats not right!), t-shirts, mugs, old macs.. maybe iven some fish tanks! :)

They should also give out imacs to the first 1000 people who walk in the store :-D lol

    attendants

I hope they have adequate training and pay for the store attendants, not just your average store attendant... after all, how are you thinking different if you store clerks are as incompetant as anyone else's?

    Syracuse? Try Rochester.

The Carousel Mall may be rather big, but I still think Rochester is a better choice, due to the fact that there are more Tech-friendly (and Mac-friendly) people here.
Rochester is also a much more happening place than Syracuse will ever be.

    Rochester, agreed

Definately Rochester. We only have 1 place to buy macs and that is a crappy CompUSA ( although my last two visits had a cool mac guy there and he really knew his stuff ). We always get passed over for Buffalo and Syracuse because we are in the middle. Just look at our airport. It is one of the most expensive in the country. All the "inexpensive" airlines would rather be in Buffalo and Syracuse ( except JetBlue which is awesome and wasn't orignally coming here, many thanks to Louise Slaughter for getting them ). Rochester is definately more tech savvy than Syracuse or Buffalo.

    I want Buffalo

Seeing as there doesnt seem to be any developments on stores in Canada, Buffalo is the closest we get to us. 30 min drive from here in Niagara Falls would suit me plenty :)

    Carousel Expanding

You may not familiar with the plans to expand Syracuse's Carousel Mall to be the second largest mall in the U.S. Apple is making a smart move by getting in there early. Maybe they can get the CompUSA there to shape up their Mac dept too, I think they STILL have G3 desktops on display there...

To the Buffalo reader who wants a Apple Store:
MacCentral reported on a Buffalo News Article that claimed that one of the "other" Pyramid Mall Sites under consideration was the Galleria. MacNN may have reported it, too.
(Buffalo may be keeping their Area Code, but Rochester is still a much nicer town -- and gets much more snow. Yes, this is something to be proud of.)

    Apple/Syracuse

I went to law school in Syracuse. The town is a dump. However, because it is such a decaying rustbucket, the Carousel Mall is usually packed because people have nowhere else to go and just want to go inside and get out of the snow and cold. An Apple retail store might just do really well there. Now if only Apple will open up in Seattle and give Microsoft some competition right in their back yard!
