    why Epson?

Epson's new six-color Stylus Pro 10000 offers 44" wide-image printing at photographic quality

Yeah, that's a good one... photographic quality. I've yet to see an Epson print that didn't have scanlines between each pass of the ink cartridge, and dithering dots at 1440 dpi on photo paper. And they're still the noisiest printers ever made (how you can make an inkjet that noisy is beyond me). But because they have all the innovation with these wide-format printers and archival inks, professionals seem to swear by them.

My Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 935C makes better prints than these expensive Epson models; it does 2400 dpi on photo paper so you need a magnifying glass to see any dithering dots, and the color matching to what's on the screen is simply amazing (way better than ColorSync). Macworld actually rated the 935 higher than the its sister model (the 952), which is $300. And this printer only cost $200 (I think it's down to $150 now). The only drawback is that it's limited to paper that's 8.5" wide.

I just wish HP would follow Epson's lead in archival inks and wide-format printers so that more professionals (and more importantly in my case, my university's digital imaging department) would take an interest in them, and ditch the awful, awful Epson models.

And following in the footsteps of the recently-announced Stylus Pro 10000, it will probably cost $1,000,000 so as to correspond to its model number.

    Reply To "why epson?" above:

    I'm using Epson 1270 and 2000 printers.
Absolutely great! No problems, no smears, no wild hair dots, no lines......and the inks are archival (on the 2000).
The 2000 is very quiet (I wish the hard drive on my computer was quiet...that's what drives me batty!)
DPI is 1440....but I rarely use it-720 is super.

I use it to make prints from paintings on canvas.

I don't use ColorSync on my Epsons and the color matching is fine.

If the new 10000 has archival inks (and paper) and I can find some one that will pay for the larger prints...I am buying one.

Call me a happy Epson customer!

    Re: Why Epson?

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. I've been using a Photo Stylus EX and I don't have any problems. In fact, with the glossy and matte photo stock paper I use (I don't use epson's, so I don't know about theirs) I can't see any smear lines and I have to take a maginfying glass to see dithering. I don't know what your issue with the printer is. Maybe you're not settings things properly, or you're not using nice paper. Besides, this is a professional wide format printer. Your 870 doesn't really compare to this model.
