Lotus Development has reaffirmed its commitment to the Mac for the development of Lotus Notes. The company has also released a public Beta test version of the next release of Notes, Domino, and Domino Designer. The new set of tools for collaboration, code-named Rnext, includes a fully compatible Mac client. [updated]

    Lotus Notes for the Mac

I think this is good news. Lotus makes some fine looking software that is very well received in the IBM compatible world. I should think that Mac business users would be happy to hear this.

    Excellent!

I'm really excited about this...I'm in a Notes shop (I'm one of only a few Macs on a Design team), and have many issues with the current Mac version...

    This is a GREAT thing.

    Insignificant?

I welcome any developer to the Mac arena, but while Lotus Notes is very popular with the PC crowd, it's probably not of much significance to most Mac users.

This coupled with Orcale coming on board bodes well for Apple and the future.

    Already a great product!

I develop software in Lotus Notes for several clients in mixed workstation environments, the current release of R5 for the Mac is a great product. When I do development side by side with Windows NT, the Mac version is probably more stable.

At LotusSphere in January, the Mac team indicated that the Rnext version would include only the Notes client, with Designer being dropped. Too bad, with OS X it would be a great environment.

    New Lotus Notes client

From what I can tell, this R.Next release only runs in classic mode on OS X, so it's not carbonized. I didn't actually look at the UI (Just ran the installer which forced classic mode) There is NO mention of OS X in any readme file.

I do use Notes R5 in classic mode on OS X and the load time is actually better than running under OS 9. IMHO notes has always had an AWFUL interface, but as long as you run IMAP/POP3 and the web server parts of Domino, you don't have to see much of the client anyway
