Readers report QT 5.01b18 seeded

updated 08:15 pm EDT, Tue April 3, 2001

Several readers are reporting that Apple has again quietly updated QuickTime 5 to v5.01b18, although we were unable to obtain the update under Mac OS X [It is likely a seed to developers only.] QuickTime 5.0 ships with OS X; however, QuickTime 5 Preview 3 is the latest release for pre-OS X systems. (Betas of v5.01 have been privately seeded to developers over the past few weeks.)

    QuickTime 5

the version that ships with OS X is not QuickTime 5. It does not have Sorenson 3 and is missing some other codecs. It says 5 but it is just an illusion.

    New key needed

With QuickTime 5 on MacOS X, you needed a new key if yours was from QuickTime 3. Now, starting at b18, that requirement is present in the MacOS 9 version too.

Then what is QT 5 RT?

Have been playing with Final Cut Pro 2, and it comes with "QuickTime 5.0 RT". I am a rookie with ResEdit, so I couldnt see what build it is (not listed in "about"). Does not handle .avi/Divx, but it looks better. You can install QT5 RT next to QT 4.1.2 Pro, and they both work normally..
