Orinico drivers: not for OS X

updated 06:15 pm EST, Wed March 28, 2001

", 0, 0);

Agere Systems, formerly known as the Microelectronics Group of Lucent Technologies, writes that it will not be supporting Ornico wirelesss products under OS X. Although Apple's AirPort 1.3 under Mac OS 8/9 supports Ornico cards directly with its built-in drivers, OS X does not. Agere representatives forwarded concerned customers the following reasons for its development stance:

1. Apple computers, both mobile and desktops, are equipped with non-standard built-in Airport slots and antennas since late 1999. Apple's intention with this approach is to have customers with an Airport-equipped Mac to choose Airport Cards as their preferred WLAN client products.

2. We have full confidence that Apple will continue to support Airport under MacOS-X on Airport G4s, iMacs, iBooks and Powerbooks. This allows Macs to be fully respected clients on Orinoco WLANs.

In addition to that we will continue our support for the older MacOSes on the Apple platform. (MacOS 7.5.5, 8.x, 9.x). "

    whats going on here ?

There is a discussion on www.go2mac.com where people have rung a support number for Orinoco cards and been advised that drivers will be out in April ?

Can anyone sort out this confusion.

    This is BAD NEWS!!

This now leaves me totally out in the cold. I have Lucent Wavelan cards for my Wallstreet Powerbooks and Airport Base Station. Apple says that they will not support these same cards that are in the Airport Cards. Now Orinico says the same thing. Does this mean that I have to buy a new Macintosh just to be able to use Airport and OS X???

    What B.S.

    1. Apple computers, both mobile and desktops, are equipped with non-standard built-in Airport slots and antennas since late 1999. Apple's intention with this approach is to have customers with an Airport-equipped Mac to choose Airport Cards as their preferred WLAN client products.

What a bonehead. We're not talking about newer AirPort-capable Macs. We're talking about pre-AirPort PowerBooks which utilize these Orinico PCMCIA cards! Why the h*** should Apple have to support a product bought from another company? If Apple were to give such support, it would be out of good faith.

    Lame a**.

    Apple maybe?

Since Airport is based on the Lucent stuff, hopefully Apple will be able to provide WaveLan drivers in the future. I really don't wanna have to buy a new laptop just to get Airport. And personally, I'm not planning on replacing my laptop till they replace that Mobility 128 chip...

    AirPort and third parties

Apple's AirPort software will support ONLY Apple hardware in Mac OS X. This has always been Apple's stated position. It makes no sense for us to try to support n*n hardware configs. It would make it impossible for the software & hardware developer to stay in synch. If you doubt this and have been around a number of years, I would remind you of what a mistake this was when this was tried with Ethernet in the late 80's (Apple NSI- Network Software Installer). In this case we tried to release drivers for ANYONE'S Ethernet adapter.

As has been pointed out in a number of posting the software driver responsibility is that of the hardware vendor, in this case Lucent. We are working with them, as we work with many developers (Farallon, Cisco, etc), to encourge and assit them in doing the required work for mac OS X. Wether they do the work our not is a business decision that they will have to make.

If this is a concern for you then you need to make sure the THEY are aware Mac OS X support is critical to you.

    whats Apple hardware ?

How come when I open up my Airport Base Station I find inside it exactly the same Wavelan Silver card which is stuck in the side of my powerbook ? Is this Apple hardware or not ? Are you supporting base stations or not ? I think that reality is a little more complicated than you are pretending here.

Has anyone got the email address for Agere ? I think its time for a little email campaign.

    Not to mention Techworks

Techworks cards don't work with MacOS X either according to a good friend of mine who has one. Question is will Farallon's or D-Link's? If you have an answer please sign my guestbook http://www.index-site.com/gbook/form2.html

    re: whats Apple hardware

Michael's right. I believe Apple is doing some passing of the buck here. My Airport base station has a Lucent Wavelan card in it.

Here's an email contact for Agere in case anyone wants to contact them. nhaug@agere.com

    OK wait a second...

Then why is it in OS 9.1 that I do not need my WaveLan driver/extension anymore? My WaveLan card used to mount on the desktop as WaveLan PC Card. Now it mounts with the Airport logo on it with "Airport PC Card" as its name. Come ON! This REALLY sucks for older G3 PowerBook owners who were told that our machines would be compatible with OS X...
