UMAX says will not provide support or have software that will support Mac OS X "for at least 90 days from the date of Apple's official release date. At the time of this writing, Apple's official release of Mac OS X is set for March 24th, 2001. After June 24th, UMAX will make a determination at that time as to which product models will be supported on Mac OS X and when such software support will be released. It is recommended that persons interested in OS X visit support@umax.com for more information on release dates."

Jusr make sure that scanner you buy is NOT a Umax. Keep an eye out for companies that are offering early OS X support, and support them by buying their products.

    Umax Support

I think it would be a great idea if everyone let these companies know how OS X users feel about their lack of support. The more they hear form us the more they will pay attention.

    NOTwhat they used to be

I have had my UMAX ASTRA MX3 for about 1 1/2 years. The support is horrible. They were great at first, but have gone downhill fast. I never even try to contact them anymore. All I get are automated emails. And now, no support for OS X? Its time to move to another company. Too bad for Umax. But I will write a letter to them letting them know how I feel. Let's support the early supporters of OS X . This is a whole new world with X anyways. I'm going to start out fresh.

    UMAX letters and OS X

I sent them a letter yesterday. It's good to send them something, as I did, via email. Just be forewarned, as the reply you will receive, will be a very cold form letter response. Maybe they'll at least keep track of the numbers. As for me, I'm going to just give my UMAX scanner away, and purchase a new one from another company...Canon most likely. The headache of owning a UMAX scanner will be cost enough for whomever becomes the recipient of the beast near me.

    Alerting UMAX

I wrote UMAX telling them I will be purchasing a different company's scanner for next scanner-upgrade because of this awful decision. I encourage other UMAX users to do the same.

    Put on the Pressure

This is what I'm sending UMAX..
I have puchased UMAX scanners for years-However, your current position on OS X drivers for Umax scanners is unfortunate. I hope you will reconsider and begin development on these ASAP. As inexpensive as scanners are today-it is not difficult to make a change. Companies that have the foresight of being early adopters of OSX will gain new customer loyalty and sales.

    Gotta have it

My department just spent $3000 on a Powerlook III. I hope to heck UMAX decides to support these high-end SCSI scanners. There really aren't any professional grade Firewire scanners (yet)

This is what I wrote, please everyone flood them and let them know that not everyone has some WinTel bozobox:Dear UMAX, I am the owner of an Astra 1200S scanner with transparency hood, and have long recommended UMAX scanners to friends, family, and clients. The scanner has served me well, and the MagicScan software has been great...

However, after hearing of your disinterest in Mac OS X, I may well have to reconsider this position.

If drivers are not made available for my scanner in a reasonable time frame (e.g. by the summer), I will not only make my next scanner a Canon, but will also be sure that those around me do the same. Why not just carbonise MagicScan as quickly as possible, supporting the scanners that it does now? Tardy OS X support, and comments that suggest that few machines will be supported, if at all will anger the Mac community greatly. You will not only lose me as a customer, but countless others as well.

Please do not forgot your Mac customers.

    Sincerely,
    J. Sorrels
