Microsoft is offering $50 cash back on purchases of Office 2001. The mail-in rebate runs through June 15, 2001. (Microsoft earlier announced that Office 2001 customers can receive upgrade version of Office for Mac OS X for half price ($150) upon its release. )

    Uh, hmmm...

Shouldn't this upgrade be free, you SOB's? I would consider paying an upgrade price if it were rewritten in Cocoa, but come on!

    What did you expect?

    Of course it's a rip-off.

    They're Micro$oft, after all...

    Well…

2001 is a decent enough product. Best upgrade: it's easy to turn of the “office assistant”. My preference of course would be for Bill Gates merely to send me $50. Heck, make it $50,000,000. I'm not greedy…

    Yeah Write

maybe these guys (yeahwrite.com) will port their wordprocessor to OS X.

    I'd pay for that

Do I have to get MS Word, or is there a better one for the Mac?

    Yeah Write?

Are you high? WTF kind of program is this? It may have something to do with writing, but I'm not sure it's even a word processor. MS has its problems, but this thing is just plain bizarre.

    Alternatives to Word

AppleWorks is cheap, reasonably powerful, and has a lot more than just word processing. Mariner Write is a very slick word processor, and inexpensive. Don't know about X support—I'm sure it'll run under classic, but unsure about a X-savvy version.

    Word Perhect

h***, the only word processor anybody really needs already works on OS X through your browser and the Flash Plug-in!

(I first saw this parody at Flash Forward 2000 NY. Kudos to Tomoko Takahashi and Jon Pollard!)

    Star Office

When is Star Office going to be ported to the Mac?
Should be easy to do an OS X port seeing as how its already linux based.

    Cheesy Ports

Sure, there's all kinds of software out there. Have any of you looked at Windows or Linux software? If you're really Mac users, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the low quality that is accepted or even gets raves in non-Mac environments. X will bring lots of opportunity for good Mac software, but a simple recompile is not enough for a good Mac application. Wait and see. Meanwhile, take a look at Yeah Write—the one that person above is cheering for. Post another message on this board when you have stopped laughing.
