Several readers note that Apple has pulled its AppleWorks 6.1 download, which contained both an update for AppleWorks 6.04 (Classic) users and also installed a preview version of AppleWorks 6.1 for OS X: "Coming soon. Check back for an updated version of the AppleWorks 6.1 preview for Mac OS X."

    AppleWorks 6.0.4

Appleworks 6.0.4 IS a Carbon application (not Classic) -- and runs fine in MacOS X w/o invoking Classic.

    just me?

well, i just grabbed the appleworks update from my iDisk this morning. the app crashes just after the splash screen every time, no matter what user. moved it into the applications folder in os x instead of the os 9 apps folder, same problem. oh well, 6.0.4. ran just fine anyway, being carbon and all.

    Re: Just me?

6.1 seems to be working fine for me. Whew.

For some reason, I try to force myself to use native tools whenever possible on any system I'm using. If I have to do any meaningful Classic work, I reboot into Classic. Forces me to leave the "crutches" behind until I absolutely need them and learn to make do with what OS X / BSD / NextStep has to offer. Necessity as the mother of invention and all that rot.

But I was missing a native office suite until I got a hold of the updater. Whew!

    Appleworks & MS Office

I was able to get the updater to work on 2 machines, no problems. Also, AppleWorks 6.1 can read/write to MS Office docs, and it appears that MacLink stuff is built in. I was able to write out an MS Word doc and crack it open in MS Word just fine.

    6.0.4 Carbon is BUGGY

I've got a 2nd Generation PowerBook running 10, sloooooowly, but everything works, well. OK, the point: 6.0.4 crashes EVERY time I try to setup a document section and EVERY time I try to setup a paragraph section, through the format menu. Yuuck.
