More OS X drivers coming?

updated 07:25 pm EST, Tue March 27, 2001

Scott Nichol notes the pending release of more OS X drivers: "Just wanted to let you know that apple has updated the driver downloads page for OS X. It now includes a graphic pointing you to your iDisk where additional drivers are available from canon, hewlett packerd [sic], and epson. I loaded up my iDisk and at 1:30 today, the drivers folder inside the software folders had been modified and there is now an Epson folder in there. The drivers inside are exactly the same as those found on the OS X distribution, but looks like they're planning to distribute an update soon. "

    there is an update commin

I sent a message to Epson asking when drivers for my Stylus 740 will be out. I KNOW there currently drivers for it but I have a computer that doesn't have USB. I connect through serial to my printer which requires me to boot into 9.1 to print. Anyway, Epson told me that new drivers which would allow me to print through serial will be available Sat.

    Correcting the typos ?

Instead of writing [sic] beside an obvious typo, why not simply correct it and spare the poor soul the ridicule of having done a mistake ? It is not as if one changed the wording : that would require a [sic]. But a typo ? Come on !

    Where ARE the drivers?

I've been to my iDisk several times now, and no drivers have shown up in the Software/Mac OS X Software/Drivers folder. Is anyone actually seeing these things? I for one would love to see drivers specific to my LaserJet and DeskJet 1120C.

    Yes, they are there

At least, they were yesterday. I think the path is idisk/Software/Mac OS X Software/Software Library/Drivers/Epson

When you quote someone you need to either quote them exactly and add [sic] to show that the errors were not due to typesetting, or you need to block off the changes to show what was changed. This helps to combat people being misquoted and is pretty much a requirement in any serious journalism. An example of blocking off the changes would be to write it like this:

"...additional drivers are available from canon, [hewlett-packard], and epson."

The problem with that method is that you don't know exactly what the person said in that place - they could have said "a company with the letters hp as their symbol" or anything else. Using the term [sic] is ugly but it is one of the safest and easiest ways to handle the matter and it has been a standard in journalism for a long time.

I think that mistakes *should* be fixed. Think about it, we're all intelligent people here, why not get over ourselves enough to FIX stupid mistakes. I wonder when society will stop being so dramatic about things and just make things better.

Gosh, do you think maybe he didn't fix it because it would have required opening the image in an editing program, fixing the mistake, hacking into Apple's servers, and replacing the faulty image? Also, it's fixed now. Breathe.

    Musta been a test

Cuz when this story broke, I checked and the drivers were there. Now they're not. I guess Apple was just testing the updater or something.
