Reader: less PB battery life under OS X

A MacNN reader notes that OS X may lack power management features found in Mac OS 8/9, finding that battery life was not quite the same under the new OS: "I've installed OS X on two Titanium G4s; with 9.1, they had 3 to 4.5 hour battery lives, and now with OS X, they have 2 hours & 45 minutes or less!!"

The new OS will push your processors a lot more... gotta love the eye candy!! 'Course, it wakes up in a second, right?

    Actual times or reported?

I've only used it on my Pismo (G3/500) but I noticed that the first night, it displayed considerably lower numbers for estimated time remaining; however, I was able to run just as long as I normally do. I didn't time, but it was many, many hours (I have two batteries). Over the past day or two, the time estimates have been quite reasonable and in line with my actual experiences. I haven't indepently timed, which is really what will have to happen before this question can be settled meaningfully. But I don't have time to do it, and I'm not that interested, because I CAN'T TELL ANY DIFFERENCE. Which is good enough for me. YMMV. Happy X-ing....

    less sleep time ?

My titanium G4 seems to lose battery power faster when sleeping than it did when I was running OS 9. This seems odd - has anyone else experienced this ?

    iBook sleep

I've noticed a definite change in the amount of power consumed by my iBook while asleep. I put it to sleep last night with a little bit of juice left (enough to have kept it going through the night under OS9) and this morning it refused to wake until it had been plugged into the wall

    Swapping

This is because OS X uses the hard disk a *lot* more than OS 9 do. It swaps on the disk with the new memory management system.

Could this also be so noticeable because we're using our 'books more (mine is a Graphite 466 iBook) because we can't tear ourselves away from X? So we're draining the batteries quicker? That said, I got my first "low battery" warning two nights ago, the first since the first week with my 'book (which was when I also couldn't tear myself away from it! Hmmm...).

    Sucks

During classes at school i would always use the energy saver to spin down the hard disk so that i could use Appleworks to type notes without any noise. Now, the iBook 466 won't spin down in 9.1 or X. I have no idea what to do.
