AppleWorks 6.1 offers Office compatibility

"Abe J" sent us a note regarding Office compatibility with AppleWorks 6.1 (Preview version for OS X): "My updated AppleWorks 6.1 seems to include Office translators when run under OS X. I can save as Word 98, Word 6, Word Windows 97/2000, or Word Windows 6/95. I haven't tried opening an Office document yet. I remember Office incompatibility was/is a huge negative for AppleWorks 6, and I'm glad to see Apple remedied this."

    Wow. Hope so!

If this is, we may very well be moving to AppleWorks in my office in the future. Thats for sure. :)

    Uses MacLinks Translator

I tried opening a Word document and Maclinks progress bar came up converting it to AppleWorks. It wasn't able to read my resume properly which had tables and other funky formatting in it. It also wouldn't open one of my documents with some pictures in it. It did open a plain test document though. It is better than having no support like in the past though.

    RE: US Appleworks only...

well, do what apple WANT you to do, use the US version!

seeing as they're obviously leaving us out in the cold yet again, I think it's right that we should be perfectly legally entitled to download the US version of Appleworks 6 off hotline for nothing and then update THAT version. They obviously don't want to charge people in the UK for an updated product they clearly want so that obviously means they don't want our money!!!

not that I'd condone ripping off apple in the slightest, unless you already own appleworks, using hotline would be downright cheeky. (well, cheap if you think the measly sum they charge for Appleworks is too much, which I don't)

    Some workarounds

I found that some documents that I had created on my PC (in Word 97 and Word 2000) would give a conversion error when attempting to open in Appleworks 6.1.

However, if I open and save these documents (once) in Word 2001 first, they will then open in Applework 6.1 just fine. Perhaps Word 2001 is making some kind of changes needed for compatibility. Kinda wierd, but it works.

    How?

I'm curious how anyone got Appleworks to save in word format. My only options are Appleworks formats, no word formats are available. Was this part of the original install of Appleworks or the update? (I don't remember Maclink ever being installed.)

    Foreigners..

Instead of screaming bloody murder and not being able to BETA test yet something else from Apple, why don't you let us "blokes" test the software and then when the bugs are squashed - Apple will present you with the finished product so YOU don't have to deal with all the screwup's?

Until then - isn't there anything you guys can do so that Apple *thinks* you're using a U.S. computer or whatever so that you can help us beta test ;) ?

    updater gone?

it appears that the 6.1 updater is missing now...

    6.1 is an UPDATE

AppleWorks 6.1 is both an UPDATE and a beta. If you are running Mac OS 8.x or 9.x you will now have AppleWorks 6.1. If you are running Mac OS X, then you will run AW 6.1 beta for Mac OS X.

The trick is, if you're running Mac OS 9.1 the updater installs a package file with 2 versions of AppleWorks. What OS you're running (9.1 or X) determines which version runs when you double-click on the package file.
