Firmware update problems: explanation?

Reader Harry Zink says the recent firmware updater problems that caused some Macs not to recognize RAM modules is due to "electrical tolerance and compatibility between the two ram modules, which one could describe as a timing issue (most likely related to differing CAS refresh times)."
