A new study finds that U.S. school district spending for instructional technology has declined to $5.6 billion in 1999-2000, down from an all-time high of $6.7 billion in 1998-99. Also according to the report, District Technology Coordinators project that one-fourth of 2000-01 desktop computer purchases will be a Macintosh platform.

    Not too suprised

I'm not that suprised, most schools made the leap and bought the computers. After this, there will be mostly money spent on mantinence.

    But for new purchases,

I expect OS X to gain significant ground in education with its networking capabilities: They're just far beyond anything that Windows NT has offered, and the boxes are much cheaper at that.

Schools that relied on UNIX in the past because it's robust and relatively inexpensive will have an easy time migrating to the new Apple platform, while supporting their existing Macs at the same time.

    small change

Just to put it in perspective, the money spent in the US on magazine ads was up last year by 20% to ... get this ... 17 billion! Just imagine what could be made better with that money, like education, instead of all the c*** in every magazine you pick up.

    Laptops in Education

Lets not lose sight that our public schools are still failures and all the hardware, be it Windows or Mac, won't help until someone realizes getting back to the basics (in lower education) of the 1940's and CONNECTING those with laptops nothing will change. Vochers aren't really a bad idea because they would cause competition between schools. Along with our great iBooks we'd be on our way again.

    Education

If our schools are failures it is because of teacher's salaries. Why would a talented and dedicated person spend five years getting and education and then get paid less than a McD's manager? Never in history have communities spent so little (percentage-wise) on teacher's salaries.

    american education fails?

Then it's because of the chauvanistic, jingoistic attitude of many americans concerning the rest of the world. Too little time is spent on things that aren't american. No amount of technologyo is going to fix that idea either, especially when the majority of it comes from companies entrenched in american culture.

    Get tech in edu degrees

The typical person in an education program consistently scores lower on standardized tests, plus they typically take fewer math and science classes. Further, they are rarely take any computer science or engineering classes. This is also true of faculty - minors are usually history or literature, rather than math or science. (Go check with your local university and see. There are exceptions, but they are rare. The above was true at Berkeley when I was there a decade ago, and is still true today as best as a slapdash phone survey of the departments could tell.)

If we want to see good technology investment turn into actualy productivity, make the teachers-to-be learn the skills in their early training. Then, encourage this as a form of continuing education.

The Mac can help this tremendously, as I find it a better platform for productivity. If the software exists such that a teacher can accomplish a tech-related task in an hour that used to take two, then we have an extra hour to use for the primary mission - education. Similarly, students who learn at a deep level that the computer is their servant, not their albatross, are more likely to use them well. Time formerly spent fighting with the interface is time that can be spent learning things of importance.

    Failure?

If our education system is so terrible, how come we have the best economy and highest productitivity of any nation in the world?

There's a lot of room for improvement in our educational system, certainly, but it's not the cesspool that is often portrayed in the media.

I'm afraid we'll see little real improvement until teaching pays well enough to attract our best and brightest. If technology is to have the impact on learning that we hope for, it needs to be used by intelligent, talented people.

Yeah, let's slam educators and over generalize. Your comments are exremely insulting to the teaching profession and for anyone studying to become a teacher. The real issue is the lack of funding and programs available in school districts to keep staff trained in the latest and greatest. Give me a break! For the record, I'm an English teacher turned Technology Coordinator.

    Education in America

If all of you who spend your time ripping American education would spend a week full-time in a classroom as a teacher you'd have a completely different perspective. Like all buisnesses, education has its share of failures, but there are also many successes. In public education you have to work with what you're given. I've been teaching in very poor public schools for 10 years, and I am looking at leaving this job at the end of this year. The cards are stacked against you, and when the public doesn't back the job your trying to do, well... you get the idea.

I think anyone who comments on education in America should have to spend a week in a classroom trying to make a difference before they open their mouths.
