A support document Logitech's Website notes the company does not plan to provide OS X support for a number of its current QuickCam products: "there will be no support for Mac OS10 or later operating systems. This is because no further development is planned for these cameras."

    driver

I have an USB QuickCam and now I don't have drivers for it (I use OS X for about a half year now). Uses QuickCam an open spec? If so, why don't we write a driver?

    Kensington

Look at Kensington for their webcam OS X support:

    NetMeeting ?

On a somewhat related subject... does any one know of a Mac software that is compatible with MS NetMeeting ?

The problem is that since NetMeeting is free and included in Windows, more and more people are using it... So I am wary of buying a webcam (despite the fact I might be interested), because I do not want my webcam to be "not as useful as it could"...

If you look closer, you'll see Kensington only lists beta software for their mouseworks software, not for the webcams. To my knowledge, Apple has not ever released any kind of API to video developers of USB cameras. No, you can't write universal drivers, as almost all camera manufacturers use different chipsets in their cameras.
