APC: no support due to lack of OS X driver

updated 02:35 am EST, Tue March 27, 2001

APC's customer service says that it will not be supporting OS X with software that will provide system shutdown in case of a power outage: "As of right now, we do not plan to support the Mac OS X O/S because, as of last known configuration, Mac O/SX did not have any power driver support. Should this condition change in the future with another O/S upgrade or patch, I am sure our software engineers will be accommodating to it." Concerned readers can contact the company via email or phone.

    Maybe . . .

There's one called PowerGuardian from a company called BenaTong. It seems to support UPSs from APC, BestPower & Tripp Lite. The Bad News is that it's developed for NeXTStep. However, since Mac OS X is based on NextStep and assuming this company used the Cocoa APIs . . . I suggest concerned folks check this URL: http://www.benatong.com/ and email sales@benatong.com to say in a "PC" fashion, "What's up with a Mac OS X?! :)

    APC support for OSX

It's on the way. The lack of a serial port hinders general
UPS support, but I've found a way around it that involves a small
    hardware device..

If you want to be informed when we go beta, let me know directly at chuck@benatong.com subject: powerguardian for osx

    thanks

Later APC devices also use USB for connectivity, as its standard on both platforms (as opposed to serial, which you need two different cables).

    APC and USB

I'm aware of the USB UPS's (acronym overload) but APC isn't the only game town. I happen to like their UPS better than most, but it would be silly to commit this much effort to a vendor that doesn't even want to support OSX.

I wanted to create a very general solution that would let you use almost any vendor's UPS including the "dumb" ones.

When you finish PowerGuardian, I have a couple of big Exide units that would love to talk to it...8-)

    APC Says "No"

I emailed APC about the fact that several web sites had reported
essentially the same thing: no MacOS X support was planned. Here
is the response I got from APC:

Thank you for contacting APC on March 27, 2001 and expressing
your concern over the support of Mac OS X.

I do not know what Mac web sites are reporting that we will not
support OS X, but it is mere speculation. We have not released
any official information about our plans for OS X and any
reports out there simply made up.

Make of this what you will.

    APC support for OSX

Well folks, PowerGuardian for OS X is just about done. I'll be ready to let it out to a few folks for beta in the next day or so. check out http://www.powerguardian.org for more info. Screen shots are at.. drumroll.. /screenshots

I want to pass it out to just a few folks until I'm sure the permissions and install locations are kosher.

    thanks all
