A Japanese Website demonstrates how to overclock a PowerBook G4. The pages shows that the authors were able to increase the speed of a G4/500MHz model to 550MHz and G4/400MHz to 540MHz. [procedure will void your warranty]

    Don't do it!

Please be sensible people. DON'T TRY THIS!

Apple would supply them faster is it was a good idea.
The main drawback of overclocking is heat and the PB G4 is pretty hot as it is.
    Increased heat means decreased stability.

    Balls of Steel

This guy must have iron gonads to go proabing around in a PBG4... I'd be terrified to know that one wrong move could fry my beloved PB.

Yeah... and they'd charge you more for the faster system. This procedure proves there really isn't much of a difference between a 400 and 500 machine other than a few toggle switches.

    but why?

the increase in clock speed resulting from this procedure hardly seems worth th effort

    Benefit of what, like 9%?

Either this guy has money to burn, or seriously needs a brain transplant.

    To push further & beyond

This person just proves that nothing is impossible. It may be outright dangerous and lunacy to do what he is doing.

But I admire him for his ability to go for it.

    My kudos to him.

    Bus vs. clock

I would have expected the 400 clocked to 540 by uppin the bus speed to 120mhz to be faster than the 500 upped to 550 by only changing the bus clock multiplier.

    Keeping Apple Honest

I remember when I was the first in the US to overclock a 6400 in a simular manner. Without experimentors like us, we would not have know that earlier systems were being sold with no difference other than a resistor placement. Oh, and with a $1000 price differential. Who is calling the kettle black?
