CE Software today announced that it has acquired QuickConference, an instant messaging application for Mac and Windows networks. Among the product's highlights, it can work on local networks that do not have an Internet connection and features secure messaging, URL and e-mail support, server linking, custom address books, multi-user logins and more. Pricing varies depending on license size, ranging from $24 per user to $8.

How interesting -- QuickConference was developed first by CE, then was sold in April 1998 to the Prairie Group. Now CE is buying their baby back.

I used the 1995-era QuickConference and QuickMail, and they were great applications. CE deserves sainthood status for developing QuicKeys, and I wish them the best of luck with this.

    not that it matters...

...but didn't they own this before? We had QuickMail back in the mid-90s, and rapidly abandoned the platform while they screwed their customers as they finally woke up and made the transition to a non-LAN-based product. QuickMail definitely included QuickConference, and had they a clue at that time, they might have been able to jump the gun before AOL Instant Messenger came and ate their lunch.

    Isn't this company dead yet?

    Dead? No way.

I still use QuickMail, version Pro 2.1, and it's still great, easy-to-use software. I did spend some time with Entourage, Eudora, Outlook Express and some of the lesser alternatives but I found no compelling reason to change. I like QuickMail so much sometimes I compose regular text in QuickMail just because it feels good. The best feature: tiny screen real estate, if you set the preferences right. No long row of icons running down the side of my screen. Second best feature: not having to view mail in a frigging pane. A message in a separate window! I do realize you can change this on some of the other clients. Also, Eudora's nickname feature is the worst sort of kludgery.
