Removing SCSI cards for OS X install

Dennis Callahan writes that removing his Adaptec SCSI card 2906 allowed him to install OS X, after he encountered several problems with the process: "it appears to be working fine. For all of those who have had a hang before the install...make sure there is no 3rd party SCSI card in the system."

    Same conclusion

I too came to this conclusion after 4 installs of OS X- the 2906 card (which has worked fine since OS 8.5) seems incompatible with OS X. adaptec has a newer low end SCSI card which I am going to try to see if it is compatible.

    drivers

me too, the problem is the firmware and/or driver for that card in os x. its a termination issue. my B&W needs that card to burn cd and mount jaz disks and an extrenal HD.
adaptec is supposed to release a driver for it soon though.
    oh well!

    are you terminated

I had the same problem, but found that if all of the SCSI devices were turned off (in my case a CDRW), and the chain had a terminator at the end, OSX boots without worrying about the adaptec card.

    nope

I tried that.all devices were off and terminated. then I unplugged the db 25, still no go never ending spinning cd after restart to install on my B&W g3 400 w/384.

    sucka.

    Works fine here

No problem here installing or running X on my b&w G3/400 w a 2906 card. I have only 1 device on the chain, and it's off and terminated.

    Hmm...

Well, hopefully OS X will run fine for me like it did with you, since I also have a B&W G3 400Mhz with a 2906 card. I need the card to use my Zip and scanner (although I can live without the scanner for a while).

    Of course it doesn't wor

Adaptec made comment on the 2906 card back when the public beta came out.. it was published on either Mac Central or another news site.. I don't recall which as it was months ago. They made it clear that they were not supporting the 2906 under Mac OS X because it would need a rom upgrade and the current lowcost 2906 is not flashable.. however they did say that they were going to have a new card that would be released shortly after Mac OS X's final release date that would be supported.

I was some miffed when I read it a couple months ago

    Woks for me

No problems here with 2906 and Mac OS X. Installed on G4/400 (AGP) with old faithful HP4C scanner and SCSI 100mb Zip drive on 2906 chain. OF course none of those items are recognized in Mac OS X - but I had/have no problems either installing or running X.

    Of course it doesn't pt.

Ok - checked again and found the original article which was posted on Adaptec's site. It appears however that enough people have complained and that they changed their policy to include the 2906.

    Partial solution

I remove the file "Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext" and my G4 start OS X without problems.

Now, I can use the SCSI card with MacOS 9.
