iTunes OS X plays nice with screensaver, ES

Clifford Norton sent in a note about iTunes' functionality under OS X:

"An interesting note about iTunes (OS X); it now functions properly with included OS X screen saver and Energy Saver C/P. Previously (OS 9.1), the monitor would stay on and the hard drive would not (obviously) spin down. Now, with iTunes in foreground, playing MP3's, with visuals on the screen saver activates and the monitor blackens as scheduled in the Energy Saver C/P."

    iTunes for X Where's bas

The OS X version of iTunes has lost it's low end. The bass is GONE! What's going on here? If you'd like to compare, boot in 9, launch iTunes and play a known mp3. Then reboot in X, launch iTunes for X and play the same mp3.
    NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE?
It may not be iTunes, it may be X, because running iTunes for 9x in emulation on X still lacks the low end. BAD.

    Another X iTunes Quirk

Has anyone else felt that iTunes X is slow? On 9.0 on my G4 350, it routinely achieved 4-5x+ importing. On X, I can drop down to 1.3x. The settings are the same on both, and I have 384 megs of RAM.

    iTunes X needs optimizati

The "1.1" version number is to keep parity with the feature set of iTunes 9 but the X edition is obviously very much a beta.

Hopefully in a few months it will be optimized to be as blazingly fast as iMovie X, which is the most impressive Carbonized app I've seen so far.

    Do not condemn xTunes

    ... at least not yet.

Everything and the system is new under X... So no one, including Apple programmers, have gotten the hang of programming in Carbon. Basically, everybody's just learning to drive here ! As a matter of course, there are old habits that must be lost, new ones that must be gained... It is not easy for anyone ! Hey, think about it : here comes Mac OS X and "poof"... there goes 15 years of experience !

Mind you, even if Mac OS X is final, this not the same Mac OS X final release we will have in 6 month time ! The whole Mac OS X experience is very organic right now... ever changing and evolutive... I guess "darwin" and "Carbon" are very appropriate these days !

All this to say that iTunes is not perfect right now... But I'm pretty sure it will be nearer to perfection in 1 month ! Let's call it ßTunes !

    iTunes on X

It'll get better. Just wait and see. I haven't noticed any of the problems other people are reporting though. Once Apple re-writes the visual effects for Quartz they'll be amazing.

    Encoding NOT compatible

Well, it may be OK when you are playing MP3s, but when I am encoding, as soon as the screensaver or energy saver kicks in iTunes locks up and at least once it's locked up the whole system.

Disable the screensaver and energy saver when encoding.

Oh, and I get good encoding speeds, even when simoultaneously playing back.

    I agree

Yes, it feels slow for me too in X compared to 9, but then again most everything does. I also have sound drop out problems as well, which may/may not be related to iTunes.

    b/w g3 owners-

Hello fellow blue/white G3 owners. We should really try to keep in touch during this process of OS X installation/usage. I volunteer to be the start of a "B/W G3 newsletter." Send me your email addresses, and if anyone has a comment, suggestion, or instruction about an event they've witnessed in OS X with their b/w g3's , I'll make sure everyone gets forwarded the message.

Go ahead and email me your address.

    Visuals

don't know if any one else has seen this. Besides the sluggishness of OS X, It apears that iTunes on my B & W G3 400 MHz doesn't like to display the wonderful psyco video on full screen mode.

It appears Apple has released a Beta OS with Beta Software. Bad Show
