OS X launch: reader experiences

updated 04:40 pm EST, Sat March 24, 2001

While most have been generally positive, several readers provided first-hand negative experiences about the launch of OS X:

[Bill Davis] I'm writing to alert readers of my poor experience purchasing Mac OS X this morning at CompUSA in Alexandria, VA (Store # 477). When I arrived at 10:15 AM, the new software was nowhere to be found and the Apple store-within-a-store was looking pretty bleak. When I asked the information desk about OS Ten's whereabouts, the sales associate first told me that it wasn't out yet, then informed me that the proper pronunciation was Mac OS "Ex." After asking him to look into it a little further, he saw that it was in stock but still sitting in the warehouse. He went to look for it and vanished. After 20 minutes of standing around with several others waiting for Mac OS X, I noticed that CompUSA was only handing out INDIVIDUAL COPIES of the software from behind the counter for those people who actually knew to ask for it.

[anonymous] I run an apple only dealership, I read that if I were to preorder copies of OS X from either of Apple's distributers, Ingram Micro or TechData, I would have copies by the time of it's release. Today is Saturday March 24 and I'm yet to see a single copy, not even a demo copy, to show customers how it works. With all the recent news of Apple's plans to build retail stores, I allready feel like I'm going to be driven out of bussiness, but then they can't even send me a copy of there most important opperating system in seventeen years. I makes me want to shut my doors, and buy a PC.

    CompUSA sucks

I can relate to the other experience for a CompUSA in VA. I have recently returned from a CompUSA in Edina MN and was told a number of far fetched reasons for them not having OS X demos or information available. One sales person stated that the manager would not allow an install to be performed on a demo machine even if I provided my OS X discs for the job. I was prohibited from carrying a copy with me while browsing, had to specifically ask for a copy from a hostile sales force, and listened to the same sales force state to a customer that once OS X was installed there was no way to revert to OS 9.

What a load of s***. I won't be recommending them to anyone again. It's interesting because there was quite a little gathering of Mac folks in the Store within a Store and all expressed feelings of being treated like second class citizens.

Otherwise I couldn't be happier with my OS X experience so far. It's nice to have a fast (despite what was posted previous) stable modern OS. It's something that has been long overdue and is an impressive first step in a new direction.

Apple does indeed manufacture wonderful products; however, OS X was a big steroid rush for the average consumer. To begin with, many hardware peripherals will not work on the new OS and hard drive partitioning is a must and it is slow.. Apple neglected to list these small but important points before its release date of 03/24. They should have invested more time and come up with an OS that is literally plug and play. Every previous OS was a snap to install. OS X is nothing but a headache. I am back to 9.04 and out $240 for an OS that needs 2 GB of HD space and a heck of a lot of RAM....Apple...I am not impressed. After my purchase, Windows 9x looks not too bad. Another year perhaps and it may improve. My advice is that Apple should have waited and put out quality instead of competing with Gates for quantity and not quality.

To the last reader. In my opinion, no one was forced into buying OS X. Also, I don't think Apple made any false claims as to OS X's current capability set. System requirements were placed on the box, stating that 128 MB of RAM was recommended, and was hard disk requirements.

So Apple should have waited until every driver and piece of software written for OS 9 was re-written for OS X? If that were to be the case, I'm sure we would be using OS 9 for the rest of our lives.

Apple needs OS X to develop a user base before developers will begin to release supported applications, and drivers. Its a case of which comes first, the chicken or the egg.

My advice is that you should have waited until OS X was better suited to the average Windows 9x user.

    Re: OS X

well it's nice that you would like a nice and fancy operating system that magically works out of the box, but how, pray tell do you think Apple would do this? why it's by releasing the core-OS, with all important OS functionality so that developers, like me, can write the programs that you rely on so desperately.

so seriously, shut up about OS X not being perfect. of course it's not! but if Apple had waited until it was perfect us developers would be left out in the cold, and your OS wouldn't be ready for years yet. OS X is excellent, and it's quite snappy, even on my G3/350. feed it RAM, and OS X will be nice to you, but if it doesn't have the little details you want, fine! wait 'til the summer, but please: quit your bitching!

    I can't believe you guys

Unbelievable, Apple finally ships this amazing new operating system and all people do is complain about what's missing. Hard drive partitioning??? What? I didn't have to do that. My own install experience on my home G4 WAS completely brainless, super-easy. Couldn't have been better at all. I downloaded the copies of the new iTunes and have been merrily working away. What a great, great OS.

    Re: I should have known

I just got my copy and it works great on a G3/300 (BW). 9.1 is just as snappy as 9.0.4. Mac OS X seems to be fine and I very impressed with the speed of running classic applications. I'm not sure what you messed up but I think you need to give it another shot.
