Yellow Dog Linux 2.0 status update

updated 11:55 am EST, Fri March 23, 2001

Relaying the status of the much-anticipated release of the PowerPC Linux variant, Yellow Dog Linux 2.0, Terra Soft says that during its final "stress tests" last week, it uncovered several new problems including a bug in the partitioning code and is working hard this week and the next to resolve these issues: "We have made our 2.0 package set (based upon Red Hat 7) available for any power users to test and provide feedback. We've already fixed several, relatively minor bugs discovered through public beta tests and appreciate this assistance."

    Linux is always option

OS X won't kill Linux on PowerPC, although it may hurt installed base slightly. A lot of people running Linux are doing so because of its nature - because of its license, it is prevented from being owned by any one company, and represents a level of freedom in software that commercial products don't offer; the freedom to modify the system in any way you desire, as long as you return your changes to the community.

Apple is following the path with Darwin and its other open-source options, but will never be fully accepted to the Linux community unless they relicense the system under the GPL (an unlikely event anytime soon).

Personally, I would rather use OS X because of its BSD roots and its superior interface, but competition is always a good thing. Both systems can force the other to keep up.

For more on the philosophy behind Linux, and the difference between the similar-sounding but ideologically-different terms "Free Software" and "Open Source", visit the Free Software Foundation website.

(no, this is not a flame.)
