HP debuts LaserPrinters with Web functions

updated 05:35 am EST, Wed March 21, 2001

HP has introduced a series of LaserJet printers with new integrated Web functions that "allow customers to scan documents directly to the Web, remotely manage printers and supplies, and print information directly from wireless devices."

  • Its new Mac-compatible high-performance workgroup printer, the HP LaserJet 4100, has new technology that allows it to execute Java applications for interacting with e-services, cell phones and handheld devices. The printer offers Adobe PostScript Level 2 emulation and also includes a smart chip print cartridge and an embedded Web server allow for remote printer management and supplies ordering via the Internet. The $1100 printer, available immediately, replaces the HP LaserJet 4050 printer.

  • The $700 HP LaserJet3200m is a new Mac-compatible all-in-one device that can multitask several functions, including printing, copying, faxing and color scan-to-Web features. The HP LaserJet 3200m AIO supports Mac users, is due in early April, and replaces the HP LaserJet 3150 AIO. (A $600 3200 version only offers Window-compatibility.)

  • The HP LaserJet 2200 printer has an infrared port for wireless printing from mobile devices and offers Web-based, remote management of basic printer and network configurations. The $800 printer is due in early April and replaces the 2100 series.

  • The HP LaserJet 1200 and 1220 printers, for $530 and $400 respectively, have an optional integrated color scanner/copier accessory that can scan and send color documents via e-mail, convert documents to digital format for editing and storage, and scan color images to the Web. The HP LaserJet 1200 and 1220 models replace the HP LaserJet 1100 and 1100a printers are also due in early April.

    http: Mac compatible?

Well, if their "web control panel" is anything like the one in the LJ2100 series, you get a nice "Macintosh OS is not supported to run this application" when trying to connect to your printer via browser. I am guessing it has something to do with JAVA.

Not a nice way for HP to provide a "seamless, accessible to all" interface to their printers...

    Finally!!!

HP has finally done it! The 3200M arrived just in time and we now have a fully mac/pc network compatible printer without having to run fax services on a PC. The software is straightforward and simple to install... So far so good. Anyone else having as much luck as me?

    oh no...

Great, the last thing I want is for my printer to get hacked. I can see it now; the front panel will keep flashing "E4E 0WN3D J00" and the printer will continuously print out reams and reams of pages with nothing but "All your base are belong to us"....

    $100 more for Mac users

The LaserJet 3200se (Windows - $599) and the LaserJet 3200m (Mac - $699) are the same hardware, according to an email I just received from HP. My company just purchased a 3200se and upon searching HP for Mac drivers learned of the new 3200m. My request to HP for Mac drivers was turned down, although they acknowledged that the two machines were identical. So, bottom line - Mac users are being charged an additional $100 to get the same functionality as Windows users.

From the info on their web page, the only real difference is support for "HP Language" postscript emulation. I wonder if this could be added to the other 3200 models, or is it imbedded in hardware?

You would think for an extra $100 we could get REAL postscript! At least I could see a little extra for the royalty to Adobe!

Both HP and Epson announced Airport capable printers will be arriving in the future at Macworld in SF 2001.
