OnStream, a pioneer in the ADR tape backup field, has ceased operations. The company was best known in the Mac space for its affordable, high-capacity SCSI, USB, and FireWire Echo products. It's unclear what support—if any—current customers will receive in the future.

    No Loss

These were the WORST backup drives I have ever seen in the fifteen years I've been selling and servicing Macs. There will no doubt be comments from people saying "but mine works perfectly" - to those people, I say, "just wait...". This company had no clue whatsoever. Justice has been served.

    rats

and this article had me all jazzed up to buy one...now I gotta either shell out the price of a low-end Cube for the Ecrix drive or put up with the slow, noisy, Imation model.

    Loss to some of us

My SCSI 30GB Echo has worked flawlessly since day one (in fact, it has been about the only SCSI device I've ever owned to have that good of a record). I am not looking forward to eventually having to shell out huge piles of money for fast, reliable backup solutions.

I have two units, USB and a firewire device, and they've worked just fine! From my standpoint, they offered a very good value in termns of performance, price, and usability. They worked easily with Retrospect as well. I say it is a loss. And, in general, any time the Mac community loses a vendor willing and able to make products for our machines, its a loss.

    A Loss

I have used Onstream units for quite some time and they have worked great. The Travan backups are the ones that have NEVER worked for me or my clients. It's a horrible slow and unreliable technology. Onstream has worked for several years with no problem. Ecrix never worked. Three units went back till I gave up. Now there are no affordable backups for the Mac. Alas....

I just bought one of those babies. It's worked ok so far. Great price. Now what am i going to do if the company is out of the market. Spend a bunch more money for somehting that won't back up as much? Man if i'd just know this 2 weeks ago I would have shopped around for something different. It looked like one of the best deals for the capacity/versatility/price.

    Why?

I have had the FireWire drive since last year.
The first one was faulty and replaced immediately (they had great customer services), since then, no problem at all.
    Looks good and performs well.
I could not find anything comparable in the pricerange with the same capacity and ease of use.
I do not understan why they went down.
In England they are sold everywhere (by all the mail order places, Mac and PC), they had the biggest growth rate of any Tape vendor last year and they used to be part of Philips.
    I don't get it.

    A good replacement...

The DLT1 mechanism has been working out *great* for me so far. 80GB per tape w/ compression, relatively low price ($1300 single, $4000 loaders... unheard of), with the proven DLT series heritage and reliability behind it. It just went on Retrospect backup hardware compatability list the week before last. Check it out...

    Success too

I also have had much success with the beasties. I have sold 4 SCSI units over the past year and all have performed flawlessly - in fact retrospect caused more problems than anything! Someone save them!

    This blows

I'm disappointed to say the least. My onstream has also worked flawlessly since the day I bought it... l'm sick of shelling out hard earned bucks to some manufacturer that goes belly up within the year of a purchase...i.e. Voodoo 5 and now Onstream.
