Afternoon tech news: PC companies have begun selling laptops that feature Intel's new 1 GHz mobile Pentium III; NCR has sued Palm and Handspring, alleging that the handheld PDAs each manufacture violate its 13-year old patent on the devices; and Real Networks has filed suit against a former employee who it claims stole source code from the company.

    What about Microsoft

And where is the law suit against Microsoft? (1) NCR must be a secret subsidiary of Microsoft (2) they aren't worried about Microsoft because the last two attempt were failures and NCR figures Microsoft will blow it this time too.

    this makes me cramp

i mean what is the purpose of such easy meal to make of a single thought that was presented though such low tech means of brainstorming. In my case this happens with regularity in the face of a blank page that sits bored with possiblities. Maybe its just the technology but isn't it scary when it becomes an issue facing all of mankind..

    Dirty Patent Tricks

PDA's haven't been obscure, so if NCR did have any legitimate claim, they blew it when they allowed them to go on for years and years (ever since the Newton). Seems like "patent entrapment" to me - they waited for PDA's to become pervasive and profitable, and *then* spoke up about their patent.
And of course they won't go after MicroSoft first: MS has immense legal resources, and losing the case against them would set precedence against the easier targets. On the other hand, if they start Palm and Handspring and win, then that will set precedence to use against MS. (So MS has a reason to help Palm and Handspring.)
