Following a settlement earlier this week between Connectix and Sony and agreement to "advance emulation programs," Sony is reportedly evaluating the possibility of adopting Connectix's PlayStation emulation software 'Virtual Game Station' to Microsoft's XBox.

    i don't get it

why would sony want to do that? that would just help sales of the Xbox.... which in turn would hurt sales of the Playstation 2

sounds like a load of c*** to me

    A good idea

This is a very good strategic move on Sony's part. Game systems are actually sold at a loss. The difference is made up by licensing fees of the games. I am not sure how the market got to that point but it is. Microsoft is already predicted to lose millions (or billions) on the XBox before it becomes a profitable system in about 5 years (when there should be enough games to turn a profit). This move is very smart because it will magnify that loss to Microsoft and allow Playstation games to run on foreign hardware, thus allowing for a greater market share. From a developer point of view, why would you write XBox games that will only run on a small part of the market hardware when you could write it for PS2 (or PS1, even better) and start with a huge market and be able to run it on XBox with this emulator? Even though the XBox might have better performance (I don't know, just for example), that principle doesn't make people buy Macs in the computer market. Remember that the game system industry (as well as the PC industry, just not as much) is driven completely by software, hardware is almost irrelevant (hence is why the GameBoy is able to do so well in the portable game system market when it is terrible even compared to what the competition had about 15 years ago).

    Bull? Bull my a**

Indigo is right. Sony would be laughing all the way to the jewel encrusted platinum bank if PS 1/2 games would run on the Xbox. The Xbox only has slightly better graphics than the PS2, though it does have the added advantage of an Ethernet Socket.

These are hardly important, consider the majority of gamers wanna unplug from work when they get home, switch on and kill things. And with already established market of the PS1 (the PS2's is coming along strong), there's aready loads of games which Sony is making money off. So why not sell more and make more money. It actually means that Microsoft is paying for the hardware loss, not Sony, who are still taking in the game lisence revenue.

Nice one Sony, keep on pissing of MS and I might just buy an Xbox :)

    PSX Emulation...Not PSX2

CVGS is a PSX emulator not a PSX2 emulator.

    HA!

This is the stupidest thing I've heard. Xbox is going to be another 3D0, no matter how much money MS pumps into it. Sony sure as h*** isn't going to support Microsoft in their conquest of the console industry.

    XBox ~ GeForce3

XBox has way higher graphics potential than PS2. PS2 is only one step up from the PSX. With the XBox's GeForce 3 EQUIVALENT graphics card, it's more like 2 steps up from the Saturn and PSX. Granted, programmers aren't likely to make full use of even the PS2's graphics card, but I just wanted to clarify an inaccuracy.

    GOOD IDEA for Sony

new PSX games are going to dwindle to nothing if they haven't already. If MS does end up licensing the PSX emulator, it'll do nothing but profit for Sony. The fact that MS hasn't announced PSX compatibility (and if Sony play their cards right, MS won't be able to do it until really close to the XBox release date) all the people who wants to buy a PS2 would've already done so before XBox comes out. And, as Indigo said, Sony would be making money with each XBox sold anyway.

    Xbox-GeForce3

and I'll clarify you're inaccuracy, the Xbox is not using NVIDIA'S GEFORCE 3, INSTEAD THEY ARE USING AN NVIDIA CARD, SPECIFICALLY MADE FOR THE XBOX, WHICH IS NOT THE GEFORCE3
