The Omni Group, a development company focused on creating products that run natively in the Cocoa environment of Mac OS X, has disclosed that it is currently working on bringing four major games to the Mac OS X platform. Among them is Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force, which was released for the Mac late last year by Aspyr Media. The Omni Group was also responsible for much of the work on the Cocoa version of Quake III: Arena. The Omni Group's Timothy Wood will be delivering a speech at next week's Game Developers Conference on the APIs that the company has used for porting games to Mac OS X.

    Quake 3

I doubt they'll do UT. Weslake said they would so that within a few months. STV is a Q3 based game... it was probably a fairly easy port for omni considering they already did Q3.

    Thanks Omni!

    UT "Cocoa not likely

I doubt that a Cocoa version of UT would happen. At least in the immediate future, unless Infogrames gives the assignment to the Omni Group instead of MacSoft (Which is a subsiderary of Infogrames). The most likely thing would be a Carbon port by MacSoft.

    I hope for UT too

even if it's Carbonized, that's still great because a lot of games like Deus Ex also use the UT engine. Hopefully when Unreal II ships late next year it will be OS X ready out of the box.

    Unreal II

Sadly, there won't be a Mac version of Unreal II. They had an interview with the guy who created the game and he said it's PC only.

    Q3 won't be Cocoa

Omni's Q3 port only uses Cocoa for gathering events. Once it uses HID it will cease to be a Cocoa app.

As for UT 2, it doesn't use OpenGL, only DirectX 8

    DirectX 8 = OpenGL

"Innovative" as they always are, microsoft has gotten closer and closer to OpenGL with DirectX. The special features DX 8 is touting are largely already in OpenGL or could be added to it with relative ease. So even if the engine uses only DirectX, it would still be very feasable to port it to the Mac OS. Considering how well the original Unreal engine has done on our platform, I'd be very surprised if this wouldn't happen.
