Samsung takes on iPhone

Samsung is once again taking on Apple's iPhone and complementing its Ultra Smart F700 that it unveiled last week by debuting the F520. The new device trades sleekness for screen area, providing a slightly larger 3-inch touchscreen with a higher 480x272 resolution. The F520 features a two-way slider that extends laterally for a keyboard or downward for a number pad and arrow keys. The device also features a 3-megapixel camera on the back, outperforming Apple's iPhone which includes a 2-megapixel sensor. A front VGA camera permits video calls, according to Electronista, and the phone includes faster HSDPA internet access with support for less common portable media formats such as Real and full HTML browsing.

Samsung says a quick-access button can instantly trigger any of the phone's core media functions -- including an as-yet unnamed mobile TV feature. The F520 will ship in September -- following Apple's iPhone launch slated for June -- and is primarily meant for Asian and European subscribers due to its tri-band GSM radio, though the company has not ruled out a North American launch for particular carriers.

    actual keyboard!

I wonder how 'great' the screen keyboards like the iPhone will be.

I don't know how many times I thumb dial by touch ... just not possible on a flat screen. Maybe some sort of audio key feedback, but still won't be the same.

Um, yeah, it's not yet slated for the US market ... and, for some reason, Americans are stupid. Most of us support an illegal war, too. Thanks!

Back on topic: competition is good for Apple. Keeps them on their toes and away from resting on their laurels. The one important thing the article doesn't mention is price. I assume it will be competitive with the iPhone, but it would be interesting to see how it stacks up.

    Now I see..

...why Apple broke tradition and announced early. Everybody is announcing their product AND the ?iPhone.
