updated 08:30 am EST, Wed March 7, 2001

Jason Greene notes that FWB has discontinued SoftWindows 98 for the Mac, as of March 1st: "FWB has determined that our RealPC emulation product for the Macintosh represents a better value to our customers. RealPC provides the same functionality and performance as Softwindows, except that you supply your own copy of Windows." The company promises tech support via email and its knowledge database through May 31, 2001.

    ah, the system works

First it was Adobe PageMill, then it was Lotus Notes, now it's SoftWindows. Finally, in the midst of a slowing tech economy, companies are discontinuing their crappy software. If only crappy shareware would follow suit...

Softwindows support? You mean the note I received after asking if they were going to have an update to support WinMe & OSX. "We are currently exploring development options re SWin & ME, & X." The short answer is NO.

    In other words...

"FWB has determined that our RealPC emulation product for the Macintosh represents a better value to our customers."

In other words, FWB has finally realized that they haven't got a clue as to what SoftWindows really is, or how it even works because they're not bright enough to allocate any development staff to it. It's a shame that a program pioneered by Insignia (when useful processor emulation was only a pipe dream for everyone else) has had to die such a slow death. When FWB chose not to actively improve and grow this product line after buying it from Insignia, it was only a matter of time before they had to resort the Dr. Kevorkian method of product support.

    Virtual PC Competition

Virtual PC 4.0 is a superior product and is dominent in the marketplace due to superior marketing and code. I cannot remember the last time that I saw an advertisement for Soft Windows in any trade magazine.

    What was that about 2000

I READ both version of the release and they all say support until May 2001. What was the first poster reading? Must be embarassing to send out a flame and find out YOU were wrong!
