G4/733 systems hit retail stores

John Horvatic notes that Power Mac G4/733 systems are beginning to appear in local retail stores: "I went to my local Fry's electronics in Campbell CA and found about 10 of them stacked up for sale. I was also happy to find out that my own 733 G4 was being shipped to me. It went out Friday as well. So good news for those who ordered them or decided to wait for them to show up in your local retailer."

    G4/733 shipping: DVD medi

For what it's worth, we got notification last Friday (March 2) that the DVD media 5-pack we ordered on February 23 was being shipped. Now, if only we could get the G4/733 we ordered on February 12.... but I realize there are a lot of folks in line ahead of us.

    Dual 533 burns the 733

Go to www.barefeats.com/G4733.htm to see how a dual 533 G4 slaughters a 733 G4. Not looking as hot as it sounds!

    What was Apple thinking?!

10 in stock? Sounds like no one is buying them. Looks like more inventory problems for Apple....

Troll elsewhere -- first y'all complain you can't get your hands on the machine, then you claim there's too many of them so Apple's knee-deep in inventory. What do you want 'em to do, ship one at a time?

    hmmm

Those #'s at barefeats don't look too promising...even if there is a dual 733 coming =/

I hope the ew chips perform much better in OSX...we'll see...

If Apple released this chip knowing that it is slower in OS 9..but not X then I can see their logic. If they released it and it performs poorly in OS9 and X...then Apple is starting to think like a windows vendor.

    Re:Dual 533 burns the 733

Look at the numbers again. Of course the dual 533 is noticeably faster than the 733 on tasks that benefit from dual processors. This shouldn't suprise anyone.

Regarding Perfromance of the 733, extending the processor pipeline was known to reduce the performance per Mhz. That is why the perfromance difference isn't proportional to the Mhz difference. This is one of the reasons that P3 and P4 perform comparatively poorly at their high clock speeds compared to the PPC family and their much shorter pipelines.

    I'm waiting ...

I took the day off from classes and work to wait for the FedEx guy to deliver my 733mHz G4. It went out on Friday, and it should be here today. I am very bad at waiting for things ...

Oh, quit your whining about the Dual 533 versus the single 733. They will both perform better in on certan apps. PhotoShop is the only App i have the is dual processor capable with G4 code, evrything else either has minimal G4 acceleration or none at all and no ability to handle dual CPUs.

    Caching

Didn't anyone notice how Apple changed the L3 cache on the 7450,
After the show (the day after) the L3 cache on the 733 clocked at 3:1, now Apple is shipping the 733 with L3 clocking at 4:1. This is probably a problem with a supplier or something (This explains the delay in shipping). If Apple used the same 266 MHz (from the 533 7410) cache speed on the 667 and clocked the L3 at 2.5:1 that would have spectacular performance. (hopefully Mot can push the 733 to 800 so that 3:1 would be 266

Yes the pipeline changed from 4 to 7 stage, but the dispatch changed from 2+branch to 3+branch, and comensurately the retire stage accordingly, and also core speed 256K L2 cache.

Fry's always gets the new stuff FIRST (in California anyway) and they sell it right away....

    533 better than 733?

I am skeptical about this and when I get my 733 I will see for myself. I think that Apple will put out revisions to the firmware if this is the case so I'm not worried. I don't think anyone who bought one should be worried either.
