Mac Publishing closes MacWEEK

MacWEEK, a cornerstone of the Mac press for 14 years, has shut down. Mac Publishing today announced that the site, which originally was published as a weekly magazine, will be merged into MacCentral—Mac Publishing's daily Mac news site—in an effort to streamline online operations within the company.

About time...

MacWEEK has been dragging their feet for two years now. It seems Mac Publishing didn't know what to do with them. I even remember reading an article on the site not to long ago where they had to explain sort of their "point of existence" after a barragee of questions (hate mail?) from readers.

Not that I won't miss the site, mind you, their writers were talented and knowledgeable (which can't be said about MacCentral...), but I saw this coming from a mile away.

Good riddance

MacWeek was only the shadow of its former self, and no longer had useful and insightful reviews and articles.
I miss the old MacWeek, but I won't be missing the web site.

Same with MacCentral, which used to be a cool, interesting site. Shortly after they sold to MacWeek they started hiring these putzes who write filler copy paraphrasing press releases. Who gives a rat's behind.

I'll stick with MacNN and occasionally MacInTouch; that's all the news I need.

Not even a year . . .

It has been less than a year since Stephen Beale announced the death of the Mac The Knife column and the new path of "no rumors" that MacWeek would take. See for the story in Stephen's words.

I went from checking MacWeek a couple of times a day to checking them maybe once a week. In his editorial Stephen admits that MTK was popular. If you run a newspaper you need subscribers. If you run a web site you need page views. Why would you get rid of one of your biggest draws, change the personality (no rumors, sign NDA's) of your business and alienate your customers all at once? Nobody, least of all anybody at Mac Publishing, should be surprised by this.

Kinda sad, but...

It makes me really sad to see this, but in reality, Macweek died a long time ago. Their site has been relatively useless since Mac the Knife was killed. They barely updated it with any exclusive news or anything of the sort. I checked it every week, but stayed for about 10 seconds, because everything that was listed had already been reported elsewhere.

Still, this old fan feels really sad to see a once high-flying icon sail into the sunset. *sigh*

I really hate Ziff D.

First MacUser, Then MacWeek goes online only, now this. And instead of MacWorld getting better, it's only getting worse. I don't think I'll be re-newing my sub. I'll give MacAddic a try, they look for Mac than that PcWorld (I mean MacWorld).

'Bout time

I used to read the print version back in the day. Couldn't wait to get the lastest news on the Mac world. MTK was the first column I hit when it came in the mail. MacWeek lost that sort of excitement a couple years ago. What a shame.

Now I hit MacSurfer a couple times a day to check the headlines. And MOSR and AppleInsider are good for some serious speculation. But there isn't a site left that rolls all that into one anymore.

A shame.

Sorry to see it go

I guess I grew up with Macs and MacWeek and I'm sorry to see Mac Week go but mags that don't keep up with the times must fall by the way side. It makes me sad. But at least the Mac culture is still as strong as ever and for that I am very grateful.

It's sad when long time Mac publications shut down. In this special time in Macintosh history many changes are occuring, a lot of Mac staples are falling by the wayside. The doomsayers are stronger than ever, but we have some jamming new machines and OSX about to be released. OSX is the greatest thing to come out of Apple since the first Mac. A lot of people are afraid of the change, but change is good. A lot of new good things are coming to the Mac along with OSX. While this is a time of optimism, it's sad to see Macweek go.

Sad, but not surprising

This is very sad, although the paucity of fresh content everyday was pretty indicative that they couldn't keep up. It's rough to see institutions like MacWeek die, but perhaps it is worse when they continue on as mere shadows of their former selves.

I hope the someplace is found for Wes George, who had just arrived there and write the best business column related to the Mac I've ever read. I also hope David Every finds a new place for is colulmn or starts updating his site again, hopefully on a more frequent basis than his collumns had been appearing recently.

Sign O' The Times

It's interesting that I couldn't wait to get the latest macweek back in 93'. In fact I planned my entire PR campaign around what I read in the weekly.

The changes that keep arrising in the mac commmunity only lead me to believe that we live in exciting times. Those who can't keep up the pace fall behind. I grow my sales every day with a Mac. I guess you could say I live and die by it, and have for 15 years. I don't think the mac is dead, I just think it is going through a rebirth.......

First MacUser two years ago, then Macweek stops their weekly publication and now stop their web publication. This site/magazine stuck around through Apple's darkest day's and now, when things are looking better than they have in years, their going to close up shop.Shame.....

Stand by me ..

I remember sitting in the computer room basement of my university department when i was a graduate student back around '95, freezing my a** of because of the air conditioning for the computers, working long hours and the system administrators copy of MacWeek was always a welcome diversion. Those were the hey days for all involved, Apple was kicking butt with the PowerPC, doing cool stuff like the Newton, the clones were here and despite the money Apple was losing, the fundamentals were solid. Then Macweek the print edition went, MacUser closed down, Jobs came back and killed the Newton, killed the clones, Motorola retaliated for all the money they lost and careers ruined on their clone venture and PowerPC speeds have barely doubled since. All we get now are fruit loop computers and a new OS that is too little, too late, that is only to vindicate Jobs NeXT vision.

It's all c***, Mac, it's all c*** ...

MacWeek & Others

The health of the the Mac and that of magazines that cover our favorite platform have nothing to do with each other. If it did, then the death of BYTE magazine (in print) would have presaged the death of the entire industry. Look at Computer Shopper. It is a shadow of its former self.

Computer magazines are dying for two reasons:

1. Increased coverage of computer issues in popular publications. Even small daily newspapers now have weekly sections which cover computers, consumer electronics, and the Internet.

2. As for highly capitalized web sites, such as MacWeek, there must be a return on investment. However, the information available at one-man operations like MOSR is just as good.

I wept for MacWeek when it went out of print. The death of its web site is of no particular consequence.

Isnt it ironic that macweek goes out just three weeks before OSX hits the streets. I guess you could say that OSX is what will really kill the Mac(OS that is - at least as we know it) - one way or another.

Well at least this is an opportunity for someone, how about this for a publication: Xweek featuring "X the blade", any takers?

I used to read MacWeek all of the time. In Print (with my 30,000 employees :-)) and their old Web Site. It was great. But it's been dead for a long time. Focusing on rewriting press releases with no analysis is worthless. I never liked Mac The Knife though.

Consolidation

Why did MacWeek die? The same reason the magazine got axed: shrinking audience, revenue and content. Here's a fun experiment: subtract the total number of pages of the newest MacWorld magazine you have from oldest MacWorld magazine you have. Here's what happens when I do it:

294 - MacWorld, May 1991, $3.95
188 - MacWorld, Feb 1999, $7.99
-------------------------------------------------------------------
106 ------------------------- $4.04 (inflation!)

Wow! Where did all those advertisements go?! Where did all that advertising revenue go?! Where did all those software reviews go?! Where did all the software developers go?! Did the font in the magazine get smaller? Nope.

Consolidation is a part of meager times. Let's hope that things turn around for the Mac market soon.

MacWeek

I DEEPLY miss the weekly paper version. My friends and I would brag about getting subscriptions to it. I even had a "Knife" mug to show off. It was a tremendous letdown to have it killed. I miss the articles, the reviews, and belive it or not ... the ads. There was such a wonderful window for vendors to show off their wares. MacWEEK should return from it's grave and do what it did best, help buyers and advertisers.

BTW: The online verision was not killer at all. I ended with Macintouch, Macnn, AppleInsider and MacOSrumors.

MacWorld Mag is bad too!

Although I'm still a subscriber, MacWorld mag is going downhill fast. They did a total redo last year and gone are the real indepth reviews that had more info than anyone could need, and the great articles. Now it's bits of ear and eye candy.

Yeah, internet killed the paper-mag star, but magazines can still hold their own if they give the depth only they can. They'll never be able to offer timely news anymore. Even Mac Addict had survived by specializing in off-beat news and info that isn't time driven. When magazines pretend they're fresh, they end up looking dated.

And I agree with those who said MacWeek didn't really have a place anymore. Still sad to see that bold red logotype disappear into the sunset....to join the likes of MacUser and the long list of others....

A sad end.

I started reading MacWEEK (and MacToday -- anyone remember that?) right from the beginning, which was the same time I started out in Mac development. It was like a miniature Christmas every week when the new issue arrived and we all fought over it. So much news, and all the interesting rumors about what Apple was up to, and back in those dark days we didn't have the Web to keep us all up to date every minute (how did we get by?)
MacCentral, on the other hand, I have few good words for. I read it for a while, when MacWEEK first linked up with it, but the awful writing, low journalistic standards (rewritten press releases galore), moronic reader comments and wretched bulletin board software all conspired to drive me away to the oh-so-much-nicer MacNN.
To see MacWEEK dissolve into MacCentral is like watching a once-proud old warhorse felled by weasels. A sad end.

MacPublishing Sucks!

MacPublishing and there fake magazines all suck. First they bought MacUser and killed it. It was a far superior magazine that was actually worth spending money on. MacWorld is just there to piss on when you are drunk. After they killed off MacUser they discontinued MacWeek print edition to launch eMedia Weekly. Remember that people...when they thought cross platform Desktop Publishing would raise more money for ads? Then what happened to that? No one bought the crappy thing and it folded too! Since that happened MacWorld kept getting fewer and fewer pages and more ads. And they sold out to Integraph for a year! How dare they put that ad in their magazine trying to convert mac users over to windows. We cannot forget when they used to make the whols back of the magazine cross platform emphasized. Come on guys...this is MACWORLD... not PC/MACWORLD. So now we are left with the crappy leftovers on Maccentral.com now and Macworld in print. I find them useless. Thanks alot MacPublishing...you are not trying to help out the Mac industry or its users. All you want is more and more money. Wonder how much longer you can survive on your sinking ship. I will laugh when this site publishes your demise. What a crappy investment for Apple when they launched you in 84/85. You guys suck!

Computer news

Most iMac users are on the net, by Apple's statistics, & aren't waiting around for dead trees to arrive weekly or monthly. In an industry filled with frequent & light news, the web is much more useful as a new medium. Mac news isn't something worth reading more than once, it doesn't warrant a publication like "Nature," it's read & used.

Most iMac users were not MacWEEK.com's target market. Sure, the average user may have found some of the articles interesting, but the people who pay the bills, the ones the advertisers want, didn't follow the magazine through its incarnations.

MacWEEK.com tried to create a new market for itself, leaving the old one behind. It was a bold move, but one that ultimately failed.

It was a good start

I've had my homepage set on Macweek for a couple years now. Although I have found that lately (in the last year) the headlines just didn't seem to catch my attention as much, it was always a good starting point for my daily Mac news intake. The Quicklinks section I especially like
But, too often the headlines would just be for some press realease.
I'm going to miss it though; no other site has, to my eye, a nice straightforward front page with easily navigable links and content. Maccentral is just links, and sites like Macnn and Macintouch just seem to fill the screen with words. Only MacAddict has a front page comparable to Macweek.

I'll miss it, but I guess I'll find some other starting point.

demise of MacWEEK

How regrettable that what was an informative source of Mac news, which has had many good professional writers, has now been assimilated. I hope that Mac Publishing appoints themselves the task of giving the Mac Universe a worthy News organ in the midst of this "consolidation". I have stopped subscribing to MacWorld, although I do look at them on the newsstand to see whether I may be interested in a particular issue. My preference so far as magazines that you hold in your hands is now MacAddict and MacDesign, with their different emphases, and also from the UK, MacFormat, which I regard as a top drawer publication in print. Print cannot compete for news in real time, so I will also look at what Mac Central will offer in their consolidation.

Mac The Knife

Basically when Stephen Beale killed off Mac the Knife he killed of MacWEEK all at once.

Mac The Knife is sorely missed.

I also miss the go between of Andrew Gore and Don Crabb back in the days of the print edition. Dueling editorials by smart, intelligent writers. Not something you see everyday.

Not Very Sad

It's always a bit sad to see an old standby pass on, but frankly it I won't miss it. There was an interesting in depth article now and then, but MacWeek hadn't offered much of interest (other than the Tidbits column, which was the only reason I kept going back) since The Knife went away.

One does have to wonder why so many Mac publications are falling by the wayside when the platform and community are, by my count, doing pretty well and headed for a strong upturn. Maybe it's because of such great "little" sites like MacNN, MOSR, and Macintouch...

And that's why I'm not not that sad--there are so many decent sources of Mac info out there that I had already turned to--one less mediocre one isn't much of a loss.

As for print mags, it's really true that they have no hope of keeping up with an industry this fast--reports are great, but for news, what's really the point? (Even the ads are kind of amusing--by the time most printed material hits the mailbox, most of the prices are already out of date.)

well, i haven't been to the site in ages anyway. I go to the usual mac sites and when i want my politics and mac news i can always go to the dependable "macfever" site. macfever I like their style and the fact that they are conservatives and don't apologize for it. better than macweek anyday!

Truth be told, I bought my first Mac in September of 2000. I've used them off and on for 6 years but only converted recently. So I've never heard of Mac Week. The brutal reality is, if it isn't meeting the need it needs to die. And when one dies, another (Macnn) springs up to take it's place. The real world just works like that.

MacFever? Uh, no

While I am certainly nostalgic for the print version of MacWeek - its usefulness as an information/decision/shopping tool in the pre/early 'Net days is indisputable - the website had gone from must-read to near-useless. Beale's NDA nonsense a while ago was pretty much the last straw, even more disturbing than dropping the Knife. While I'm sad to see the name die, I won't actually miss the content (the link went from first to sixth of my Mac bookmarks over the last couple years).

That said, MacFever is NOT any sort of real alternative. "Dependable"? Their current lead "story" is actually a Macromedia press release, complete with company sig, followed by "breaking news" of Steve's Tokyo comments. This is a news site? Not to mention the homepage doesn't render properly in Netscape, AND "We Reccomend" [sic] has been misspelled for who knows how long.

MacInTouch, MacNN, MacEdition, MOSR (and VERY infrequently, MacCentral) are far more worthy successors to MacWeek's original mission.
