Macintosh freeware/shareware creator StimpSoft is shutting down as a result of financial difficulties. The site and its software, which are both still accessible, will be taken down within the month.

    NOOOOOO!!!

This can't be! Why?! Stimpsoft is a true original, making really neat products that should have been thought of a long time ago. Why in the world must it shut down?

    What can we do?

Mr. Schilling, my thoughts and prayers go out to you.

    Just for a while?

Message on actual site makes it sound like hosting difficulties, not business difficulties per se. Maybe if he switched it all over to a mac.com address, he could be back up again? (That wouldn't solve the domain name issue, I know.) Also, weren't all his programs free anyway?

Then again, if he's in ill health medically and financially, he needs a break regardless of the possibility of other arrangements.

    I wish him well.

    For just hosting...

I'd be happy to give him space for his site while he recovers, if he can find another provider for ftp - e.g. using tucows or one of the standard Mac ftp repositories. (I'm at www.allpar.com, it's a car site but it's a virtual server, so I can support additional domains).

    A terrible shame...

Good software and a lot of fun... I hope things look
up for him! I'm sure someone can get him the hosting
he needs, see the comments above...

I think I'm going to cry

"Why is all this stuff free?
Because the only software worth paying for is Freeware."

Taken from the "About" page on stimpsoft.com.

StimpSoft, Inc. is the funniest, most original developer on *any* platform, and I'm happy it happened to be on the Mac. Who *hasn't* used his app to trash the TempFolder items bug in 9.x (pre-9.1)? It's saved me a few dozen megs every so often! And the ever useful WeatherGrok? Or the unique Snapperhead, among the dozen or so products on Mr. Schiller's site? I would even pay a nominal fee for a handful of these products had he asked for such.

As a developer in the works myself, I look at Mr. Schiller through admiring eyes. He stands out from the usual crowd of "me-too's" in the software industry. From his jocular stabs at Microsoft to his fetish with the feline population to valuable, unique and free softwares, how can you not admire this man? I hope somebody can offer Stimpsoft a new home...obviously, without compensation...at least for a while. My condolences, Mr. Schilling. If he's going out for good, I'll ask him if he would consider releasing the source codes, as I was looking forward to a few of the apps to function natively in X.

    Injecting into Freenet...

I may inject his current site into the Freenet so that his humor and products can have a home for a while longer...

Anything to keep Stimpsoft online, Son of Weather Grok helps me remember to move away from Alabama every time I open it, and that's the greatest gift of all!

    Software costs $

No one can survive by being selfless and giving away software. REALBasic/CodeWarrior doesn't come cheap (if you actually PAY for it and not d/l it off Hotline), web hosting usually involves up-front payment for each term, domain names need to be paid for yearly.

The biggest downside to making Mac Share/Freeware is that people will glady *take* it and if it has a fee, rarely pay for it or otherwise support the product. Most feedback is negative and with wonderful "Ratings" on Versiontracker.com a good product can be pounded into the ground with no recourse.

I am not surprised someone, anyone, doing Mac software simply "gives up", not at all.

    Damnit Jim!

I'm tellin ya Captain, I think we can save him! Bones, I'm afraid not!

Nooooooo! A true original on any platform. Best of luck to John in his future endeavors... he'll be missed amidst the world of mac freeware... BADLY!

    :(

Sidenote: Anyone who thinks mac freeware/shareware users are unappreciative have a stick up their a**. Period. Mac users tend to be very loyal, appreciative and WE DO pay our shareware fees for good software. StimpSoft apps were imaginative, useful, and free, but even if they'd costed money would have deserved the cash... unlike tons-o-c*** you find on Linux/Windows and yes, even mac. But enough about that... StimpSoft we'll miss ya! ;)

    I hope...

I really hope that this is just a temporary ISP problem and not the total end of Stimpsoft. One of the greatest joys in getting a Mac was discovering the witty, intelligent, dare say brilliant (who else thought of something as cool as "Snapperhead"?) work at Stimpsoft.

Then again, if he was really going away, why does he say that they're "working on a Linux build of Trout" -- a message posted only a couple of days ago?
