OS X release expected to be quiet

updated 08:30 am EST, Fri March 2, 2001

Apple won't be promoting the March 24 release of Mac OS X in large part due to a number of issues with the operating system that won't be addressed until a later a date, according to a c|net article. These apparent issues range from sleep problems with PowerBooks/iBooks to a lack of DVD support. The article quotes sources as stating that a summer update to OS X, code-named Puma, will address many of these issues.

    Another public beta...

...only this time with a higher price tag. :(

    Wait a second...

There's still three weeks until this thing comes out. It won't go GM for at least another week, right? And Apple has been pumping out numerous builds every day for weeks now.

I get pretty tired of c|net's "sources."

    Still...

As much as I can't stand c|net, it does seem that Apple is holding up features in both the Classic OS and OS X. I don't personally think Apple should RELEASE an OS that does have DVD Support or work correctly on iBooks. I would sooner wait a few more weeks for the product, and it would probably hurt Apple less. To work this hard for this long on OS X and then play DOWN the final release is just sad.

    Give me a break...

Okay, I'm sorry, but I couldn't let the ignorance pass by:

"Digital videotape isn't high enough quality for video professionals--most use Beta."

WHO THE HECK BELIEVES THAT ONE? Yeah, I'd rather use analog tape -- THAT HAS GENERATION LOSS THE MORE YOU USE IT, then digital, which offers a higher resolution, not to mention state-of-the art video and audio recording and playback.

I, too, am tired of C|Net's sources. "Oh, no, we can't watch movies!" Yeah, that's a major function that we all use all day every day. Give me a break, people.

    I'm still installing it

on March 24th...I've been waiting for a system like this from Apple since Pink was just a rumor, and I can live with being an early adopter (the Macs I support at work obviously are another story). Warts and all, I think OS X is the best thing to come out of Apple since the original Mac. I can't wait!

    Mac OS X 1.0 =

Public Beta2. Except this time Apple wants you to pay full price for it. It's pretty disappointing.... I mean, if they knew that they weren't going to have all the bugs squashed and all the features there, why the heck did they announce a March 24th date? The entire world wasn't expecting a release anytime before WWDC 2001 anyway.

The only reason I can think of... Quick cash infusion...

    Apple really steams me sometimes...

    Flat-out wrong

Among the other problems with the March release, sources said, is that it won't take full advantage of multiprocessing systems or new video accelerators, such as Nvidia's recently announced GeForce 3 or ATI's Radeon.

OK, this is just plain incorrect. Mac OS X takes FULL advantage of multiprocessing (as their web page on the subject clearly mentions), and support for the Radeon is already present in current builds. Who writes this stuff?

    OS X Promotion

I guess having a countdown claendar for days remaining til OS X, on the Apple Web Site is called keeping a low profile! The last time I saw any statistics the Apple web site was in the top 5 most visited sites for computer makers! Yeah promoting OS X to the millions of Power PC chip users with G3 or G4 Systems is a bad strategy!

    article is trash.

DVD? huh? I work at an Apple reseller. We sell lots of Apple products to lots of people. only very few people care about DVD playback. Its just not something a lot of people do.

As for sleep I have been using OSX since Public Beta exclusively on my G3 PowerBook. Sleep is great. never a hitch. wakes up in under 2 seconds!

Why are they quoting some lame video editor who is bitching about Beta input?? clearly they couldn't find any credible people to pan the OS. people who need beta input are a tiny tiiny fraction of Apple users. Most of those people are avid or media users anyway. not apples problem.

yes there are problems just not what they are talking about
    1) It is very easy to bog the UI down to the point where it is unusable. try opening 30+ 1MB graphics files then minize them all

    2) Finder does not do true multitasking. In many instances I get the spinning disk in the finder, thus rendering the computer almost useless.

    3) other than networking throughput. OSX is slower than OS9 at everything. booting up, loading applications, loading files, copying files.

    Tiresome...

Yes, the constant FUD mongers do get somewhat tiresome. Unfortunately there will always be those for whom the bucket is 5% empty when, for the vast majority, it is 95% full.

To those who don't think $129 is a fair price for OS X 1.0 (including OS 9.1) just don't buy it. No one is forcing you to do so. Spend your money instead on some Windows software which, of course, is bound to be feature complete and 100% bug-free.
