Tech: Microsoft breakup in doubt

Evening tech news: The ordered breakup of Microsoft is now in doubt as federal appellate judges harshly criticized the trial judge who compared the software giant to a murderous street gang; Gateway will be dramatically reducing the number of computer configurations it sells, from 23 million to hundreds, in order to reduce costs; and new media workers, such as web designers and others who work in the cybertrenches, are challenged daily by long hours, a lack of formal training programs and issues around tenure and benefits.

    They've followed me...

I think that they've been following me around. This is my life to the letter!

I can't believe how much time I spend reading and trying to learn the latest technologies, only to have it change on me in a few months and have to do it all over again.

One thing I can say is that I'm never bored... And being a web/new-media developer is the most fun I've ever had with a job, and offers me the most job satisfaction since I started working in the high-tech sector after graduating high school.

    Bring it on, baby!

    Finally Gateway...

When the average user buys a "Gateway" they're beyond confused or have the lack of info on what is included. Ask a Gateway person at their store and most likely they give a blank stare or guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Dell does the same as these varying setups *do* cause issues in the future etc... it took Dell 2yrs to figure out the harddrive and video card didn't like the mobo and refused to swap them with a different maker(they replaced the system after a complaint to the BBB) to my workplace's workstation.

    Classic example of how...

...time heals. No one, after time, wants to hear anything in extreme. Today there are people who doubt the holocaust. Vietnam will be denied, too. WHEN Microsoft was committing its atrocities, everyone was aghast. Now that they've stretched this case out for years, people new to the case are calling those familiar with the case, extremists and "biased". I know many people thought Judge Jackson was being too soft on MS.

I like Explorer and OE, but I don't like what they did to Netscape, even though their browser isn't far from total c*** right now. I don't like the Shop and the Stop button next to each other, among many other things. But that doesn't give MS the right to stomp out competition. Look at the QuickTime example. Even Windows vs Mac.

For every person in the legal system who can see the facts in an ageless fashion, there are a dozen who think too much of anything is bad, even too much truth. Well, how about too much moderation???

    23 million

well, I wont do the math but consider what that likely includes...

15-20 models, 3-5 hard drive options, 3-4 cd/dvd options, 2-3 video card options, 2-3 sound card options, 2-3 communications (modem/ethernet/etc..) options, 3-4 monitor options, 2-3 service plan options, 5-6 software package options, 4-5 printer options, 2-3 digital camera options, and maybe 2 other random accessories

    I know that isn't 23 million but then I likely didn't include everything I could have. The point is when you start multiplying 20 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 3 * 3 * 4 * 3 * 6 * 5 * 3 * 20 (ok fine, I'll do the math) you get a large number (23,328,0000 wow, look at that, so you DO get 23 million! what a guess!)

Haha, alright, well that was fun, I'm going to go now.

    random accessories

BTW, I actually didn't get that number right off the bat. At first I said "and 20 other random accessories" which put the number at 233 million, so I divided by 10, made it "2 other.." and got the number we were all looking for ;-)
