LAME 3.70 for Darwin has been released by Mike Cheung. This LAME encoder is terminal based, and should provide faster encoding than SoundJam or iTunes. LAME is an open-sourced MP3 encoder with a large following.

It'll only even come CLOSE to iTunes/Soundjam speed if it's made MP- and Altivec-aware.
And i've got NO gripes with iTunes' encoding quality at 192Kbit.
if somebody added AltiVec support. It currently has MMX optimizations IIRC.
