Apple's Tech Info Library has several interesting articles on iTunes, Disc Burner and iDVD software. We have a rundown of recent TILs...

Here is an annotated list of recently updated articles:

  1. iTunes 1.1 corrects a problem where v1.0 will not open when Speakable Items is turned on and one where v1.0 extension will not load if SoundJam Extension system extension is enabled.
  2. Removing the CD Master plugins from the Authoring Support Files folder in the Extensions folder will improve compatibility with third-party drives; however, "USB Authoring Support" and "FireWire Authoring Support" extensions installed by iTunes v1.1 may cause problems when burning discs to third-party machines.
  3. iDVD cannot import MPEG 1 video, even though QuickTime can import it and the help files indicate otherwise.
  4. Creating CDs and Choosing Formats explains how to create a CD using a CD-R or CD-RW and which disc format may be most appropriate.

  5. iTunes cannot install from a software install disc.

  6. A FAQ on iDVD 1.0 answers some basic quesions and details some differences between iDVD and DVD Studio Pro.
  7. Disc Burner 1.0 records in single session-mode only: "[it] will not rewrite to a CD-RW disc without first reformatting the disc." It can not create start-up discs.
  8. Disc Burner 1.0 installs Finder 9.1.1, which may cause problems if you use the Software Restore CD to "Restore in Place."

    qps burner

The firewire authoring plugins that iTunes installs caused by Toast application to no longer recognize my burner. I had to remove the files and reboot before I was able to burn using Toast. The installer does warn you that this may happen but who listens to warnings :) lol

    Huh?

If there is a problem with high speed disks why don't you just buy lower speed disks? Or do you have a stash of high speed discs or something?

    Huh?

i do have a problem if the drive specs are 8xspeed and it only writes at 4xspeed. this means apple is putting in old technology instead of what the specs promise : they should lower the price then. One more taught : how long will 4xspeed or lower be available in the real world if most cd-rw-hardware comes at 10speed or more ??? what do you do with the slow drive then : chuck it in the bin in 2 years time? That's alright for a G4 tower but for a cube??? i can't replace that myself.

    burn one down

the faster that you burn a disc, the less chance the laser has burn a groove...slower burn speeds improve your chances of uncorrupted data

    Don't fret...

the long and the short of it is: Disc Burner is a simple, intuitive, very friendly program (the ONLY issue is it burns single session, which will be altered in a future build), is incredibly stable (no buffering issues), and allows you to do other things while burning.

Ergo: don't be in such a hurry. It is a good program, and will only get better.

It is far superior to Toast, which tied up my computer, would constantly burn coasters for me, and would lock up my computer.

This is the program we've been waiting for (with the exception of allowing multi-sesssions), so you have no reason to return your Cube.

    CD-RW 4x / CD-R 8x

Apple never said that you could burn CD-RW at anything higher than 4x, therefore it is not an issue to have to use CD-RW rated at 4x or less. CD-R however, can burn up to 8x. There is no hardware/software issues. There will be no fix. CD-RW max is 4x.
